Looking for thoughts on Optical quality in relation to Magnification.
Right now I am searching for a 1-6 type optic for a "RECCE" type rifle. My options in this magnification range are a little limited for my $600 ish target price. I have seen some used Night Force 1-4x for around that price, and some other very high quality 1-4s in this price range, which is making a 1-4 a little tempting. My question is, will a very high quality 1-4x like the Night Force, or another high quality 1-4x preform better in clarity at longer ranges and target visibility as compared to a more budget but more magnification 1-6x namely the Primary Arms? Also any options I have overlooked? Open to suggestions. |

of all the scopes i've had, the NF 1-4x NXS probably had the worst optical quality. they make some good scopes, but that's not one of them.
i don't know the answer to your question, but my guess is you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. maybe look for a used vortex hd 1-6 or a used swaro z6i? |

Almost universally, resolution and optical quality are better than magnification. For that price range, I would consider the Leupold VX-R (best quality), Vortex Viper PST (better reticles for longer ranges), or Burris Tac-30 (lowest price, fat reticle). You may also find a used Trijicon Accupoint in that price range. I have never had the opportunity to compare any of them to the Primary Arms scopes. |

If it were a choice between a high power cheap($60) chinese variable scope(24x+) or a higher dollar($300+) low power scope(10x), I would suggest staying away from the high power chinese scope as the higher mag levels may not even be usable. 4x or 6x fixed, fixed or variable, variable should be no notable difference unless you are some sort of optics snob that has an eye for it. I have 2 primary arms gen2 1-6 scopes. I use them on my 6.8 and even my 308 bolt gun. Its a great scope for quick target aquisition and im not out a ton of money being those guns get banged around during deer season.
I also have a vortex pst 1-4. Also a great scope, glass is better than the primary arms but the reticle is better in the PA. Ive also had a leupold mk6 1-6. Excellent glass, reticle sucked and i just wasnt that impressed for the $$$. Ive always been very impressed w leupold glass. Even their lower end scopes. If you can hold off a bit, vortex will have some new optics soon. |
