Got out the other day to stretch the legs out on my new AMG. I took my .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor to the new 1000 yard range in Granby, MA at the Granby Bow and Rifle club. I have the AMG mounted on my 20" .308 and was shooting the Hornady 178 Superformance loads at 2805fps. I have 400 yards at my home range so wanted to get it out farther. Shot at 425, 750, 950 and 1020. Had first round hits at all but 750, which was a little off with wind. Scope tracked perfectly to the 9.2 mils I needed at 1020. Did a lot of dialing up and down and giving the knobs some use. Glass is great but that was not shocking. EBR-7 reticle worked great for holds as the 2C does. The .2 mil marks on the horizontal are very nice for wind holds. All around I am very happy with this scope.

Yeah it shocked me a little too when I ran it over the chrono but it was right on. My normal Varget load is about 2700fps with that bullet.

Did you own a Razor HD before this?  I'm looking at how the two scopes stack up.

Original Razor HD 5-20 or Razor II? I have both. The AMG is a nicer optic than the original Razor HD. The glass is better and I like the knobs better. The AMG is basically a little brother to the Razor II in size and weight. Great glass like the Razor II but with the knobs being smaller and a 30mm tube vs the 34mm. Zeroing is very similar but instead of a screw driver in center it's an allen, the same size as the ones you loosen so the tool is simple. There is no revolution indicator on the AMG but with a 10 mil knob it's not a real issue as most calibers can make 1000 under 10 mils.

Any other specific questions?

In contrast with the original Razor HD how much nicer glass (how is this even quantified...) and knobs? Is it worth the price difference?

Great post OP thank you I have been looking at this optic.

Question: its price puts it in the US Optics and Schmidt & Bender stratosphere. Is it that good?

The Razor HD 5-20 has good glass but the AMG and the Razor II glass is just clearer and gives better definition. You would have to look through them to see what I mean. The knobs are similar style to the Razor II locking knobs with zero stop. I really like them and they are tactile and audible in the clicks. Below is a video of it. Is it worth the difference going from the $1699 Razor to the $2499 AMG? I think it is but that would be up to the end user.

Price is right at $2499 like the Razor II. Both of those are better than USO and right on par with S&B. I have owned 7 S&Bs and 5 USOs.

Thanks for the review, been eyeing this scope hard.

Is this a production sample?

How would you compare to the Kahles 6-24, besides the tube/obj difference?

Got it, I saw the MSRP of $3399 and was a little shocked. I have had a Razor HD since its first year of production and I think it is a damn fine optic and have shot with and compared it to many other optics and remain extremely satisfied with my Razor HD. The only drawback is its weight which is why I started looking at the AMG but had not looked for a price until your post.

Thanks for the video too. I like where Vortex is going with their controls.

Yup this was a production scope. Showed up as they come in the box.

Haven't had it side by side with a Kahles yet but having shot one before the glass is very comparable as all scopes are in this price range. Comes down to features/controls and reticles usually for most people. I really don't like the Kahles parallax position but some do. Coming in at 28.8 ounces the AMG is a really light scope for what it delivers.

Here's a reticle pic on 24x. Pic was taken just for reticle and not to show glass as it was pointed at my neighbors house.

Yeah the original Razor is a good scope and a lot of people got good deals when they were being blown out at $1399 last year. I still have one of the 5 mil per turn models and it's still going strong. If you are looking to upgrade and drop weight the AMG would do both well.

The Defender flip caps are very nice. I had 3 sets on my Razor IIs before this one and they work great. I like how they lay flat and lock open. No flopping around or sticking out to catch on something. And they are easy to put on and they aren't difficult to take off if you needed to like other caps. They are very well built and you would have to work at breaking them but if you did they are covered by the Vortex VIP warranty and they will be replaced.

I wish my Gen 2 razor had that reticle. I hate the open center.

I was going to order a Gen II 4.5-27 until I read this thread, then found out the AMG is still a ways out.  I am wanting to put it on a Remington Sendero in .300 Win Mag.  Will the AMG stand up to the recoil?  I imagine it would, but had to ask.  Also, other than the 30mm tube, a little difference in magnification, the 50mm objective, the weight, and the reticle, are there any other differences?  Is the AMG reticle better than the Gen II, and if so is it way better?  Basically I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to wait on the AMG or just go ahead with the Gen II?  It seems the biggest factor is the weight.  I can live with that if everything else is the same quality.  Also, anyone who tells me just go with the Gen II, which reticle?  The 1c or the 2c?

Yes the AMG will have no issues with the recoil of  300WM.

Differences? You pretty much covered them but the color as there were a vocal minority who didn't like the Razor II color. Also the knobs are smaller than the Razor II knobs.

Reticle is different. I wouldn't say better. The .2 marks on the horizontal are nice to have but the .5 mil marks on the 1 and 2C will work well. The thickness of the reticle is thin enough to be able to shoot small targets but not overly thin. The open center of the 2C is liked by some as they can put small targets in there. Personal preference.

If weight isn't an issue then you will have no problems running the Razor II. Both are high quality scopes but with different features. You might be able to find an AMG that was ordered by a company but not spoken for but it would be much harder than finding a Razor II. If yopu go with the Razor II and use the reticle for a lot of holds the 2C would be a better option. The 1 works well also but doesn't have the Christmas Tree in the lower quadrants. I have both and they both work.

No the Razor II doesn't come with the Defender caps. Only the AMG does at this time. So order them up. They work great and a steal for $40 for the set.

I emailed Vortex asking about getting one in black, they said "maybe, but probably not" if the Razor HD AMG (or the Razor HD II in black) had been available last year, when I bought my Kahles 624i, I would have gone with a Razor. Came down to color.

That said- put a Razor HD II 3-18 on my 700 earlier this year, and I love it!

Zeroing is very similar but instead of a screw driver in center it's an allen, the same size as the ones you loosen so the tool is simple. There is no revolution indicator on the AMG but with a 10 mil knob it's not a real issue as most calibers can make 1000 under 10 mils.
