I live in lame NJ where long ranges are 300 yards and FFP scopes are unknown because who would need them anyway?

That said, I am intrigued and pursuing experience in more long distance precision. Right now, I'll be shooting paper and steel but want to consider hunting in the future (again, not NJ where no rifles are permitted).

I finally got my LaRue 7.62 recently and am trying to pair it with a nearly as awesome scope.  I've put a lot of time and research into different brands and models but wanted to see what folks here would say.

Here is my criteria:
- I’ll shoot 100 yds. paper but hope to become a stronger shooter at 500yds plus. So looking for a variable magnification that has a low end of 3x (5x is okay) and a top end of no less than 15x
- first focal plane
- Like to keep the objective diameter no larger than 50mm
- Length as close to 13” as possible - I do not want a 15”+ long scope.  This along with the 50mm obj diameter are because I’m looking for a low profile scope something that fits the ‘tactical’ nature.  At a certain point, the scope is too close to the size of the rifle and becomes too cumbersome
- Weight - obviously as light as possible without compromising the durability and safety of the glass.
- Horus style reticle.  A mil-dot is just not acceptable.
- I’d like to keep the price of the scope at $2k or less if possible.
- While I freely admit I’m not good enough with scope knowledge to really dive in on MOA vs. MRAD, I’m inclined towards MRAD because its a finer measurement I believe.

I was looking at an valdada 3-18 but got some feedback it's not the best offering there. Leupolds seem too expensive. Nightforces are long & heavy. Razors, maybe? Recently, I was introduced to the Bushnell Tactical Elite - but is the glass quality there with the other boys? Am I missing something altogether?

I can’t see any one of these within a 150+ miles of me, so I am purchasing rather blind.  Hence, the semi-long post here.

To answere both of the statements in bold.

Milliradians are more coarse in adjustment when compared to the Minutes of Angle system.

Last I looked MidwayUSA has free shipping on optics, and allows them to be returned as long as they have not been mounted.  I have never done this, and would give them a call before placing the order.

Of the scopes listed the only one I personally own and have some hours behind is the Bushnell XRS 4.5-30 G2.  I am really impressed by it, but I do believe the glass lacks in quality to some scopes just above it's price range.  Glass has not given me any issues to date.

The only thing that really fits all of your criteria is the Leupold Mk6 3-18x44. Don't know if you'll be able to find one with a Horus reticle for under 2k though.

If you want to look at vortex optics.  Look at the PST line.  I have both the 4-16 FFP(which is close to what you are asking) and the 6-24 FFP

Probably the easiest to learn as far as MOA and MRAD, since most americans like inches and increments of an inch is the MOA.  at 100 yards, I MOA is equivalent to one inch.  A scope with 1/4 clicks, with be quarter inches on the target at 100 yards.   Pretty easy to adjust for since targets have one MOA lines on them.

If you want to use your scope to measure distance go with the MRAD and do the research on how to use one.

Are you maybe confusing a Horus reticle with a line graduated reticle which are common? Is it just Mil dots you want to stay away from?

MOA and MRAD are both just angular measurements. How fine they measure will be determined by how the manufacturer chooses to devide them.

I don't follow your optic size limitations for your uses, but here's an image showing a few optics for size reference.

I started with a newest generation IOR 3-18 on my 308 AR and it was a disappointment. Very short eye relief and thick reticle lines made it difficult to use. It was mechanically sound but its a huge heavy scope. I replaced it with a Leupold MK6 3-18 and could not be happier. Its the smallest scope in its magnification range and is awesome both optically and mechanically. Its a great scope worth looking at.

Well, after some consultation and re-evaluation (and some hand wrenching), I decided on a Vortex Razor HD Gen II 3-18x along with ADM rings.  What put me over the top was the dealer speaking about it along with looking at Vortex's unconditional warranty.  Very much looking forward to it.

I'm sure it will, though it's way outside your stated 'compact' requirements.

How does the Mk6 compare to the other scopes you have in. The pic?

Very true, but almost everyone has to balance their wants and priorities.  Hopefully this will be a good compromise of the goals I was looking to achieve.
