Here's another "What scope should I get?" for you. I thought I had my mind made up but new information has skewed my once flawless plan. I'm about to put my new Grendel together, my first, and I need a good optic to put on top. I have pretty much kept going back to the Nightforce SHV F1 (4-14), the Burris XTR II (2-10 or 3-15), and now I'm looking at the Sig Tango line, specifically the 3-12 or 4-16 with the latter being the more likely. I had wanted to stay sub $1K with mount but, well, we know how those things go. So, what's the opinion of the ARfcom experts? I really want to hear from the guys, if any, who have had an opportunity to play with the Sig scopes since they seem to be laid out well and appear feature rich for the money.
This will be used exclusively on a target range. > 400 yards. Much appreciated |

There is a thread somewhere with a guy shooting his out to 600Y with relative ease. I asked him about the scope and he suggested the vortex viper 2.5-10x FFP. I see around $800 new No doubt Vortex make outstanding products, I have a Razor that I really like. The 32mm is the FFP model, right? |

I was going to cannibalize my 16" upper for the Grendel build. Now I'm thinking about leaving it alone and building a new upper around the AA barrel.
Since this is going to be used 99% of the time on a KD range from 200-700 yards I'm leaning towards the SWFA 10x Mil quad MIL/MIL scope. Thoughts? |

The fixed power scopes are another option, but I have no experience with them outside of the Leupold M3A. For a lightweight, multi-purpose rifle, I personally like the Viper PST 2.5-10x32 MRAD FFP. I also like the NF 2.5-10x24, 2.5-10x42, and 3.5-15x50 NXS. The biggest feature that is important to me between the PST and HSV that leans me to PST is zero stop. Once you make a lot of gross adjustments on elevation, it's nice to have a mechanical stop to turn down to, and nobody that I'm aware of touches that for under $1k but Vortex, that has a rugged scope that will retain the optical elements under semi-auto recoil. If you have a longer barrel, get the 4-16x50 Viper PST. |

Barrel length?
I've got a Vortex 2.5-10x32 that I planned on putting on a future 16" 6.5 Grendel project. Thinking something 3-18, or 4-20 would be ideal for my current 20" 6.5 Grendel build, although it'll probably wear the 2.5-10x32 for awhile. For you're planned 400 yards I think a 2.5-10 or 3-15 would be a good choice. The Burris XTR II seems like a lot of scope for the money. The 3-15 or 4-20 would get my vote. The Horus H591 reticle is available on the 4-20. |

The Horus H591 reticle is available on the 4-20. That was kind of my thought process too. I actually ended up getting the XTR 3-15. I was at first leary of this choice due primarily to some haters on here and other forums but I try not to put to much stock in those opinions without first trying it for myself. Though I haven't had it to the range yet— that should happen this weekend—I like the scope pretty well. The ONLY two knocks against it so far is that the windage/elevation turrets are pretty stiff, more so than I prefer. Also there are very few options for cat tails. You'll probably agree that these "problems" are more or less splitting hairs but they're important to me. I guess there is one other and that is the weight. This scope is a tank. This isint a big deal to me since it's a dedicated range gun but some guys will scoff at having an M1 Abrams on top of a rifle. I had a bit of a buffer tube malfunction that resulted in the purchase of a knew one so I'm still waiting for that to come in. As long as it gets here I'll take this out Sunday and can speak more authoritatively on it then. Lastly, I was asked about the barrel length. It's an 18" SS BHW with an intermediate gas system that I bought from a fellow Arfcomer. Precision Firearms, where he purchased it, had them at some point but has since discontinued them. I hope this thing performs but only Sunday will tell. |

You can get a Switchview for the XTR II and I've seen good reviews for this one.
The turrets will go from "holy crap, that's stiff" to "these are sorta stiff, but pretty nice with the knurling" after some use. |
