The scope is for a general purpose ar, 16" barrel so not cqb and not dmr. I want a 1 power or close to it with iluminated reticle. I want the dot on the reticle to be small enough for some precision so it will need some sort of larger circle for faster close range use. Want reasonably light (I think the 16oz pst is as heavy as I will go) and good eye relief. I was recently using the Burris fullfield tac 30 but did not care for it. I narrowed my search down to the Vortex PST 1-4 and leupold Mark Mod 1 1.5-4. Hoping to get some good user specifics to help finalize my choice. I know these aren't exactly precision but thought this was the best place to ask. Thanks all.

I LOVE my Vortex PST 1-4.  I use it on a 16" I have set up for 3-gun and general 0-200 yard fun.  The zoom ring is a bit tight for quick work, I would recommend a throw lever if you think you'll want to change powers quickly.

If you're on a budget, don't rule out the Primary Arms 1-6, quite a decent optic for the $$$.

Yes I plan on shooting 200 yards or less. Don't care much for the primary arms reticle. I am ok with the $400-$500 price point.

Really like my Vortex Viper 1-4 MRAD but would like it more if it was 1-6

I got a vortex 1-4 w/v-bright. Not bad for the price. http://www.amazon.com/Vortex-Crossfire-1-4x24mm-Riflescope-CF2-31037/dp/B00HYRGODO

I have the Vortex Viper PST 1-4. I love the hell out of it. I have it on an Aero Ultra light mount.

If I could do it again, I would get capped turrets. I open turrets get bumped on gear and range trips every once in a while.

I really want to give the strike eagle a try .

I'll share my experience with you.. i wanted a 1 x 4 for my 16" gun . Its a 200 meter, mostly close in. I like an uncluttered sight, no BDC, as its a 5.56mm and I learn my hold overs. I seriously considered the Strike Eagle, even looked thru one, but the reticle is not Daylight bright, which is not a deal breaker as the reticle is etched.

6x is nice, but not needed , at least for me.

I stumbled on a scope thru a trade on the EE, I had seen the scope before and MAC over at Military Arms channel did a nice review on it. It is the Mueller Sped Shot 1 x 4.

Its close to a Schmidt and Bender Short dot.It runs a 4 MOA dot that is etched (Works with no battery) and the dot is truly daylight visible.  The clarity is quite good and the dot is very clean and crisp. (Clarity is the same as the Strike Eagle at half the price) it came with a Primary Arms scope mount and tips at a Pound total.

After mounting and zeroing it, I have shot it several times, and each time I like it more and more... Its a great Close in Reflex that is on par with an Aimpoint.,my preferred CQB optic) and if I want to go out further, I dial up the magnification.  Accuracy is quite good with a 4MOA dot and I can keep Wolf Steel case in a 4" circle at 100 meters.

The scope is very well made, and the turrets have solid audible and tactile clicks. its a 1/2 MOA adjustment, which is more then enough for this type of gun and battery life is around 140 hrs on the brightest setting. I shot yesterday on a bright 40 degree day and never even turned on the reticle, just ran with the black etched dot.

</a>" />

</a>" />

Its not the newest or latest scope, but I think it is a sleeper among 1 x 4's and so far, It does everything I want it to do. I have been extremely impressed with it.

I am not one to run out and buy the latest(on anything) until its been around awhile. I also like simple, as simple works time and time again. Never liked EOTech or any reticle that is busy. Just one  "Dot of Death" to place where ever I want a bullet to go, quickly and efficiently. I'm also realistic in my needs and what my guns will need to do... For me, this scope does that.

Take a look at it, they can be had for under $200.

Just my $.02

Go with the Vortex PST 1-4x. It's a very good scope and will do what you need. Where in CT you shooting?

Looked at one at SHOT last year and the reticle was daylight bright. Wonder if the battery was low in the one you looked through.

I have the VXR Patrol on my work rifle, and I would not recommend the 1.5x lowest power. The Firedot is AWESOME, but the 1.5x gets annoying quickly. I'm looking to switch to a true 1x

Thats very possible, as it was at a Gander Mountain... The reticle was too busy for me...

The real sleeper in this category is the meopta meotac 1-4, I like the vxr patrol also but the reticle is way too fat for anything precise
and the uncapped turrets are a big handicap for a work gun, the USO is probably the most capable but it's overpriced and weighs a
ton, the new trijicon accupower is another top choice as well, for me it's the meotac or the accupower with the meotac winning on reticle
and brightness in full sun.

Over all build. The PSTs have better glass and knobs. The Crossfire line is made in China also.

Harv, I gotta say the Mueller Speed 1-4 isn't close to a Schmidt and Bender Short Dot. I am happy that it's been a great scope for you though.

Also IMO the best deal on a 1-4x is the Steiner Military 1-4x24mm from europtics at $699. These are closeout German Steiner scopes. It's not the lightest weight 1-4 but it's on closeout price now and the glass is beautiful. The red dot is actually aimpoint bright. It has mil single turn turrets with just over 9 mils of elevation adjustment. (The turret's don't unfortunately lock). I have compared the 556 and the 762 reticles side by side on a mil grid at 100m and the difference seems to show up past the 400m bdc line. They were really close even then. My philosophy is a 1-4 is only good until about 400m anyway. Also I marked my turrets for my known drop so I can just dial and enjoy the really small center dot.

I hear you, My comparison to a S&B is only because the design is similar and the Dot is Aimpoint bright.  before I stumbled on the Speed shot, I looked at quite a few and did a lot or research..

The Strike Eagle was one...

The Trijicon Accupower was another, along with the Steiner...

But now that I have the Speed shot and its been working for me, I now have issues spending the $500-$700 for what will be for me.. a minimal improvement.

And the OP's requirement kinda of fall into the Speed shot's specs.

Sorry for my delayed response back to this post. With 3 kids and 2 under 2 time usually gets away from me quickly. I shoot out at sprague rod and gun as my home base but go to others with friends occasionally. I ended up with the PST. I looked thru a few different scopes at my local cabelas and really liked the clarity and reticle. I got a stupid deal on it between gift cards, cabelas bucks I saved and coupon. So far I like it a lot. The one moa dot is great for more precision work, the large outer "ring" really brings you on to target quickly for close work. At one time magnification I can hit index cards standing unsupported at 50 yards very consitantly. I like the quick come back to zero feature. What I don't like is it is difficult to turn the "dial" to change power. Yes they make throw leavers however I am not sure I will like that. I don't like things hanging of my guns that can get snagged on gear. I guess I will just get one for the spring and run it a bit to see how it works out. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Cool. I shoot IDPA up there from time to time but this past year wasn;t a good year as I was working most of the weekends. I shoot down at Ledyard Sportsmans. We have 400 yards don there so if you wanted to stretch your rifle out some hit me up with an IM and we can find a day.

Primary Arms are Chicom.

The Leupy is the best one here.

Mark AR mod 1 1.5-4

Leupy weighs 9 oz.  The PST weighs 16 oz.

MGM Eagle eye

Try the MGM Eagle eye. its cheaper. then if you like it, you can get the metal version built for your model scope.

I'd definitely take the Vortex over the Leupold.. my Leupold was way too distorted on low power.  If you find an old Burris 1-4 XTR it would be money well spent.

I'll throw in the Trijicon Accupower with the segmented circle crosshair and BDC...great clarity at 1X and the perfect reticle IMHO...you'll have to paint it yourself though.
Got this one new online for just under $600 delivered.

SWFA HD SS 1-4. Incredible glass, great reticle for precision shooting, donut of death out circle lends easy use to close quarters shooting if the need arise. I can't say enough good things about mine.
