| The scope is for a general purpose ar, 16" barrel so not cqb and not dmr. I want a 1 power or close to it with iluminated reticle. I want the dot on the reticle to be small enough for some precision so it will need some sort of larger circle for faster close range use. Want reasonably light (I think the 16oz pst is as heavy as I will go) and good eye relief. I was recently using the Burris fullfield tac 30 but did not care for it. I narrowed my search down to the Vortex PST 1-4 and leupold Mark Mod 1 1.5-4. Hoping to get some good user specifics to help finalize my choice. I know these aren't exactly precision but thought this was the best place to ask. Thanks all. |

I LOVE my Vortex PST 1-4. I use it on a 16" I have set up for 3-gun and general 0-200 yard fun. The zoom ring is a bit tight for quick work, I would recommend a throw lever if you think you'll want to change powers quickly.
If you're on a budget, don't rule out the Primary Arms 1-6, quite a decent optic for the $$$. |

I seriously considered the Strike Eagle, even looked thru one, but the reticle is not Daylight bright, which is not a deal breaker as the reticle is etched. Looked at one at SHOT last year and the reticle was daylight bright. Wonder if the battery was low in the one you looked through. |
| not to confuse ya even more, but this Bushnell is what i'm looking at to possibly buy next. |

The reticle was too busy for me... |

The real sleeper in this category is the meopta meotac 1-4, I like the vxr patrol also but the reticle is way too fat for anything precise
and the uncapped turrets are a big handicap for a work gun, the USO is probably the most capable but it's overpriced and weighs a ton, the new trijicon accupower is another top choice as well, for me it's the meotac or the accupower with the meotac winning on reticle and brightness in full sun. |

Harv, I gotta say the Mueller Speed 1-4 isn't close to a Schmidt and Bender Short Dot. I am happy that it's been a great scope for you though.
Also IMO the best deal on a 1-4x is the Steiner Military 1-4x24mm from europtics at $699. These are closeout German Steiner scopes. It's not the lightest weight 1-4 but it's on closeout price now and the glass is beautiful. The red dot is actually aimpoint bright. It has mil single turn turrets with just over 9 mils of elevation adjustment. (The turret's don't unfortunately lock). I have compared the 556 and the 762 reticles side by side on a mil grid at 100m and the difference seems to show up past the 400m bdc line. They were really close even then. My philosophy is a 1-4 is only good until about 400m anyway. Also I marked my turrets for my known drop so I can just dial and enjoy the really small center dot. instructions link here http://www.steiner-scopes.com/pdf/Steiner-1x-4x-scope-user-guide.pdf |

I hear you, My comparison to a S&B is only because the design is similar and the Dot is Aimpoint bright. before I stumbled on the Speed shot, I looked at quite a few and did a lot or research..
The Strike Eagle was one... The Trijicon Accupower was another, along with the Steiner... But now that I have the Speed shot and its been working for me, I now have issues spending the $500-$700 for what will be for me.. a minimal improvement. And the OP's requirement kinda of fall into the Speed shot's specs. |

| Sorry for my delayed response back to this post. With 3 kids and 2 under 2 time usually gets away from me quickly. I shoot out at sprague rod and gun as my home base but go to others with friends occasionally. I ended up with the PST. I looked thru a few different scopes at my local cabelas and really liked the clarity and reticle. I got a stupid deal on it between gift cards, cabelas bucks I saved and coupon. So far I like it a lot. The one moa dot is great for more precision work, the large outer "ring" really brings you on to target quickly for close work. At one time magnification I can hit index cards standing unsupported at 50 yards very consitantly. I like the quick come back to zero feature. What I don't like is it is difficult to turn the "dial" to change power. Yes they make throw leavers however I am not sure I will like that. I don't like things hanging of my guns that can get snagged on gear. I guess I will just get one for the spring and run it a bit to see how it works out. Thanks for all the suggestions. |
| Cool. I shoot IDPA up there from time to time but this past year wasn;t a good year as I was working most of the weekends. I shoot down at Ledyard Sportsmans. We have 400 yards don there so if you wanted to stretch your rifle out some hit me up with an IM and we can find a day. |

MGM Eagle eye Try the MGM Eagle eye. its cheaper. then if you like it, you can get the metal version built for your model scope. |
