Hey guys little newer to the bolt guns I bought a Weatherby x vanguard .308 I guess it's called. Trying to figure a good scope for it. I would love to be able to stretch the guns legs someday and shoot 500+ so I'd like to find a scope that can achieve that distance. Now the hard part I would like to stay below $400. Been looking into some vortex's. Any other recommendations on scopes or which reticle would be best. Thanks.

How do you plan to use the rifles 90% of the time?

The vanguard is basically a howa 1500 action fancied up. They are damn fine rifles and you should be able to use Howa 1500 accessories for it.

Weaver 3-10 Mil

+ a good set of rings and a 20MOA base would be a good start. You can hunt with this and learn how to use Mils. Its not FFP but should be a decent start.

Other options are:

If you can scrape some extra cash together, this would be a nice step up:

I would not ordinarily recommend a tactical, exposed turret, ranging reticle style scope on a rifle that will be used primarily for hunting.

But, the Weaver Grand Slam Tactical MidwayUSA exclusive 3-10x40mm MRAD linked above would be the possible exception if you really do want the capability of shooting accurately out to 500 yards and stay in the stated price bracket.  It is Japanese with very bright optical clarity and solid construction.   I have one on a long range bolt gun and like it a lot.  Turrets are accurate and repeatable, at least out to 600 yards, which is as far as I have taken that rifle with that scope.  It is a great way to learn to use the MRAD system for long range shooting.

But, my hunting rifles have capped turrets and tend to be lighter.  I zero for 3" high at 100 yards with most of those rifles and have point blank range to at least 300 with no need for holdover.  In OP's price range would be the Leupold VX-2 and some models of the VX-3.

My 2 main hunting optics are a Steiner Military 4-16 and a Bushnell 3-12 LRHS. Both have exposed turrets (well the LRHS has capped windage).

It's nice to dial for elevation and hold for wind.  Makes long shots in open country easy.  Pair it with a Kestral and Laser Range Finder and your getting first round hits easy.

Sorry for not replying for a few days been crazy busy. The rifle will be used mostly for target shooting. Trying to get my feet wet with some long distance shooting. If I ever was to use it for hunting I'd probably slap a 3x9 on it or use a different gun.

This is right at $400 and a great scope for the money.
