I have a Remington 700P with a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 6.5-20x50 with the old style Mark 4 base (pre pic rail) and 30mm medium height rings.

The scope sits really close to barrel. With lens cap on, the objective lens is only 1/16-1/8" above it. In addition the scope tube isn't very balanced in the rings due to issues with eye relief and the lack of options without the picatinny rail.

I've been considering replacing this setup and mounting my buddy's new Leupold Mk4 tonight is pushing me over the edge.

Do you guys think this is necessary? Or should I just leave well enough alone?

What do you mean not well balanced? I'm guessing the front ring is up against the bell? Could you post a pic?  Do you have good eye relief? If you do I'd leave it be as long as you are not having any issues.  The distance between the scope and barrel is fine.

Eye relief is fine. Yes the front scope ring is right against the bell. The rifle shoots fine, I have consistently shot 1.25-1.5" groups at 200yds (weather and wind permitting)

That does look close to the barrel but with the measurements you listed I wouldn't worry about it. When I had a MK4 it looked just like that due to the Tikka Optilock rings.  Enjoy your rifle. I see no reason for concern.

The scope cap is what is almost touching.

Thanks for the confidence boost. I'll leave it be and spend the money on more ammo.

Anytime.  Getting more ammo is always a great choice for a fine weapon system like yours.
