So I'm looking at building my first "precision" AR based platform.  I'm looking to build it off of Aero upper/lower but eventually replace the barrel.  They guarantee 1 MOA from their guns which for it's intended purpose is just fine and I'm no super ninja sniper anyway.  My problem is the caliber.  I own both .308 and 6.5CM and as of this moment I do not reload.  The purpose of this rifle would be a SHTF 800yard and in rifle.  So ammo availability in said scenario is important.  This would not be a hunting rifle as I have plenty of those already for that purpose.  This would be just a way to make an accurate shot from 800 yards and in, I figure if I need to take a shot longer than that I probably shouldn't take it but if I did that's where my bolt 6.5CM comes into play.  I figure .308 ammo would be much more abundant in this scenario.

Go the ARFCOM way and get both?  2 uppers for one lower?

TL:DR - Want 800 yard and in rifle for SHTF.  Own both .308 and 6.5 already in bolt guns.  Ammo availability is key for SHTF.  Help me decide

If one of your main concerns is ammo availability the 308 is pretty much the easy choice.  Ammo available anywhere that sells it.  I can walk into a local sporting goods store and their is typically 5 or 6 choices for the 308 for the 6.5 there is none or one choice.  I do think if the 6.5 keeps going the way it is and can basically kill of the 260 remingotn then it will become much more available.  Its unlikely it will ever reach 308 levels but it will be available everywhere.  Problem is what happens if everyone starts moving to the 6mm creedmor, there is already a shift starting.

In SHTF, .223 Rem, .308 Win., and .30-06 was nowhere to be found on shelves.  Remember Sandy Hook?

The ammo you stack and cache is the ammo you have.

X2.

When Obama was elected the first time, we couldn't even find 22lr for a few months. Once an extent happens, the shelves won't be your savior.

If preparation is you main driver, you need to plan for the even well in advance. Adding a box...or more....of shells to the weekly shopping list is one strategy.  Getting a press and dies, primers, powder, and lead is what I would consider a minimum for anyone thinking about the shtf scenario.

X3 and get together with friends and loved ones and stock pile the same calibers. On the ranch/farm the everyday carry weapons are either a Grendel or  .223. So ask yourself what are you going to be willing to carry and how fast can you get it into action? Then the next question is can the person next to you shoot it accurately?  My choice would be something between 16" & 18" barrel light with a low to medium power optic. Then my night rig would be totally different with a dedicated night optic and higher capacity magazine.

imo i would look into reloading instead of adding another gun. just stockpile the components and can roll your own. biggest one would be the gunpowder. the 6.5 and 308 are already good choices out to 800 meters.

I think for any precision rifle in your armory you need to plan on stocking a sufficient amount of ammo for it. You're not going to zero your your precision rifle in and develop a dope chart etc. with premium 180grain smk ammo then expect to pick up some 147 grain ball off the ground and have good results at 800 yards. Pick one caliber or the other and get that upper and spend the money you would have spent on the second upper on a reloading set up. Scavenging ammo for your precision gun in a shtf scenario just doesn't play as well as it does for your m4 or ak. Just my .02

Go with the Creedmoor and start stacking it. Don't rely on what you will be able to get later, buy now so you won't have to worry.

I suggest you change your criteria to 600yds max and build a precision 20".223 wylde AR it will be able to shoot regular M193 and the 77gr match ammo
