Hi everyone. I'm really interested in a precision rifle, but if at all possible I'd like to avoid buying a complete rifle and prefer to stick with my SBR Colt 6921 lower. I'd prefer a 16-18" barrel.

Can you help me in my discovery phase with some answers and/or advice with my question?

1. If I wanted a complete upper, what should I be looking at in .223?
2. What mods should I be looking to do on my lower, if any?
3. I plan to run my suppressor, does this change anything?

These might see like newbie questions and I definitely and a newb in the game. I didn't see any threads with these questions/answers so I decided to ask myself.

What trigger is in your rifle? Is it a plain Jane m4 stock? What's your budget for an upper and optics?

It's bone stock at the moment. I'd like to keep the complete upper (sans optics) around $1,000, so barrel, rails, bcg, etc. I was thinking of a Lilja M4 fluted barrel to start.

I have, several times over the years, had what I thought were very good ideas for a "kit" of two different uppers for a single lower to be swapped as the situation called for.

In every case, zero exceptions, the extra upper eventually became another complete rifle... even though that was not my intention.

YMMV, but lowers are cheap.

Ha. Yeah, I can see how that would happen. I just don't want a second complete rifle, but like you said, things change.

So far I've worked up some pricing on a Lilja m4 fluted/threaded barrel/DD BCG/DD Gas Block+Tube/DD Charging handle/DD DD4M 15" rail, Rainier upper receiver, all for around $1,500

Am I missing anything in that build?

Is the DD gas block adjustable? Might help if you run a suppressor. SLR makes a nice adjustable one.

I would also look at Geissele trigger or Larue MBT over the factory trigger.

Thanks for the info. I do not think the DD gas block is adjustable, and yes you're right I should probably consider that. That thought did cross my mind.

I have two "precision" uppers for one lower. I just put in a decent trigger. Mine is a M4 stock and I bought this cheap CAA snap on cheek riser to match both scope heights.

Extra uppers turn into complete rifles, extra lowers do the same.

I've been there, My first AR was to be my only AR...

That was 5 rifles ago.

Yeah, I get it. Last year I sold two extra 6920s that I had and never shot. So now I just have the 6291 with an AAC can on it. I wouldn't mind a complete rifle, but I guess my plans are for SHTF or BOB scenarios. So yes, in that scenario I can still just pull one upper off the second complete rifle and get going, but in the time between now and then I'd like to think that I'm saving money by just getting the upper.

Add my voice to the "Extra uppers becomes full rifles". That said....

1) 1-7 twist 18" plus barrel length. Should give you what you need to send heavy pills longer distances. I find barrel lengths over 20" to start to be cumbersome and dedicated to range rifles. I have a 22" .223 upper and its a pain in the ass. Fun to shoot and damned accurate but its heavy and doesnt fit in just any ole case, and the cases it does fit it wouldnt fit in my car without folding down the back seat and putting it in the trunk. My opinion...if you need more than 20" you need to upgrade the caliber rather than the barrel (Unless you have very specific reasons for needing to stay in 223). Of course I could break down the rifle to help solve that problem,......

2) Trigger trigger trigger! A better stock can sure as hell help but nothing will be as important, or impact your shooting, as much as the trigger

3) Not really. Might want to look into an upgraded charging handle and adjustable gas block as you will notice significantly more blowback with the suppressor
