I am building an AR 15 style SPR with a 20" barrel in .223 Wylde. The barrel I bought is threaded. I know that muzzle devices can change the POI. I'm wondering if any muzzle devices will improve performance and why, or if there is one that will give some other benefit without hindering performance (like a brake will lower recoil but the POI will still be consistent). I'm not concerned about brands (I know buying from a reputable brand is better than buying off Amazon), I'm more concerned about the specific style. I know some styles are exclusive to the company (claymore?) and that is fine, but a bird cage is a bird cage, follow me?.
Here are the most likely suspects. Standard Bird Cage Flash Hider - Oldie but a goody. Modern Flash Hider.- I smell smoke. Compensator - Keep that nose down. Muzzle break - Recoil? I don't need no stinkin recoil. Silencer - They never heard him coming (actually, I don't live in a free state so this isn't a legal option for me, just thought I would throw it in). None - Muzzle devices are for wussies. Other - The sky is the limit. Please, only offer information from personal experience. If you have some record/evidence backing your claim that would help immensely. Sorry to be rash but, I'm not that interested in what you heard online or your friends opinion that he heard from this guy who was a navy seal 20 years ago even though he is 32 . I'm sure there are enough serious shooter on this form that I can get some solid real data.
Thanks for your input. For reference I got a GM 20" fluted .223 wylde with rifle length gas system. (I get it tomorrow Stay Cool |

That helps but only touches on flash hiders. Any one have any before and after statistics?
Am I presuming correctly if you purchase a good muzzle device it should do what it was intended to without changing POI? And if someone got a cheap one it might make accuracy inconsistent? If that's correct them my question has been answered. |
"Without changing POI" Are you going to be changing the device often?Personally, I like the standard A2. Whatever you pick, torque it, index it if needed, and load/ammo test to match the harmonics. You might be able to achieve like maybe 1/8 MOA less with a bare muzzle, but a properly made MD (IME anything besides a clamp-on) isn't gonna move impacts around or increase group size like on video games. |
