Does anyone know how reliable it is? What is the max distance(with a good optic)? What are its competitors? Thanks

Caliber .308

They shoot around an inch at 100 from the box.
Trigger is awful, but easy to make manageable with $2 in parts. 10 round detachable mags are available in 223 and 308.
Range will be limited by caliber and projectile selection, which with 308 is around 1000 yards.

i don't have one but from the reviews i see its a decent gun but the stock sucks and the trigger needs a little work. both can be easy fixes by stiffening the stock or just going with a Boyd's stock and the trigger with a different spring.

The Axis is a good gun, and normally will shoot 1" or less at 100 yards out of the box.  My 22-250 shoots sub one inch groups at 100 yards, the stock is ok for the gun, for what it is, a good basic hunting gun.  BUT...it has a pencil barrel, really heats up after 3-4 shots.  Its great for hunting, but not for sustained/precision fire.  For that, you'll want a heavy barreled gun.

Happy Trails.

P.S.  I forgot to add, the trigger sucks...6 pound pull...I added a Timney Trigger...2 pound pull

Good hunting guns, wouldn't take it to a match though. Competitors are Mossberg100 ATR, Marlin XL7, Rem 770, Ruger American....  all designed to be "package guns" for hunting, and low budget.

There is nothing wrong with the Savage Axis,  I was literally on my way to Walmart to buy one when something made me stop at the lgs first.  For $50 more than the new Savage I got a gently used Winchester Model 70 in 30-06.

I'm still considering an Axis in .223 for my wife though.  Can't decide if I want her in the Savage or a Ruger American.

Ruger American now makes a "bull barrel" model (read heavier than the norm but not a true fat barrel)....They look interesting.

Happy Trails.

Not what I would buy for a precision gun.  Any of the slightly better savages offer more options.
