This is also posted in the optics section but looking for some quick help due to these being sale ads

Found a slightly used Steiner Military M5XI for $1800; buy it or get a Vortex Viper PST for around $800? Is it worth the extra money? For the 308 version FWIW

OR THIS

Despite the cost, I'm leaning towards the Steiner. It seems like a killer deal, fits my needs, will maintain value, etc. Might be overkill for the 308.
The NF fits the bill as well but for only $300 more, is the Steiner better?
The Vortex due to being less money, good warranty, reputation and because I'm not going to be some whipass long range cowboy. The other scope choices will outmatch my skills but so will the rifle.

I've always been a believer in quality tools for the job.

Dilemma.

For the price of the Steiner you should look at the Vortex Razor II 3-18x50. They can be had for the same price and are an excellent optic. All the pros you listed for the PST but with an optic quality of the Steiner. Lots of good features on the Razor II like locking knobs, lots of elevation travel, clickless zeroing for a perfect zero, excellent 2C reticle and great glass. I have one mounted on my 6.5 Creedmoor match rifle and have used it out to about 1200 yards at matches.

The older 3-15 F1 NF is nice but the reticles were lacking. I used them when they first came out in matches for a couple years.

As Rob said, do consider the Razor II. But I probably wouldn't pass that Steiner up either. It's tough because the Vortex has the better reticle IMO. The Steiner Tactical series (SCR) has a great reticle too. The Steiner M is rather boring to me. But it's certainly of higher quality than the T5Xi.

Are 3lb scopes too bulky though?

I have had it on the 6.5 Creedmoor bolt gun I use in PRS, my 22" semi auto Creedmoor and my .223 Seekins SP3G rifle for DMR matches and no issues. Comes down to what the end user is comfortable with.
