Does Savage have an "off the shelf" rifle with a barrel profile between the heavy varmint (bull) barrels and the light sporter profile barrel? Maybe a heavy sporter?

Yes I think it does. However, I don't like the blind magazine.

I found this one, but buds doesn't have one in .308. It looks like a medium contour. One of the reviewers said the barrel was .785

The weight on the fluted 12 lrp is 11 lbs. Too heavy for a mobile hunt FOR ME. Savage has a bunch of  rifles available. I am sure they make one that would meet your needs. Finding one could be a challange.
I won't buy guns  on line. That quirk makes finding what I want challenging. Living in a large city helps though.

Okay I found what might be the exact thing I'm looking for. Its the Mossberg MVP Thunder Ranch. Anyone know anything about it?

I have a thunder ranch in 5.56 and like it quite abit . the barrel is not a bull by any means . the debbie downer is not alot of after market support . I also have a an mvp lr in 308 it uses p-mags and my m14 mags work well with it . the gun is very accurate with 168 grain amax . I also have a savage fcp-sr and it is a better gun out of the box . better trigger and 10 shot detachable box magazine . excellent trigger and not to heavy . I like the stock better . here is a pic comparing the mvp lr and savage .

+ 1 on the savage 10 fcp-sr. I have one in 6.5 creed 24" barrel for precision fun and love it. I wouldnt compete with it stock, but just shooting for practice its great
I havnt found anything better for less than 600$

I am down to the Hog Hunter versus the MVP Thunder Ranch. I am about 95% toward the savage because of the 20" barrel, it feels really good in my hands and . . . well its a savage. And though I don't like the blind mag, I think I'll get used to it.

The one big thing the Mossberg has going for it is it takes pmags. That is huge in my book. BUT I'm not crazy about the shorter barrel. and it is considerably more expensive than the savage. I also did not get to hold one as my LGS doesn't have one in stock.

Also, I have heard that the savage is simply more accurate out to 300-400 yards. So, unless you guys can talk me out of it, I think I'm going to the LGS tomorrow and picking up the hog hunter, slapping a 3-9x40 Vortex scope on it and calling it good.

very nice rifles. I took a look as the fcp at my LGS and though it looks very nice and I am sure it shoots lights out, It felt heavy and not particularly handy

if you decide you have to have a detachable mag, you can always send the stock off to CDI for inletting.  you can get magpul AICS mags now so you don't have to pay 80 or whatever per.

I went to his page and didn't see what it would cost. Have any idea? I highly doubt I would do it. If I end up really wishing I had the detachable mag I'll sell the hog hunter and get the Mossberg. But that's a great thought.

I have the 10 FCP-SR in a XLR element chassis and the hog hunter is in the
accustock the other resided in. Love them both, never owned a mossy but have
held a few and the machining on the bolt and barrel left a lot to be desired.

I think that action is made specifically for the smaller rounds like .223, .22 hornet etc.   I forget but I always had my eye on it.  I'm pretty sure it doesn't come in .308.
