would a long range hunter in 300 win mag be a good starting point for long range shooting/hunting?

I figure I might shoot it for a while in factory condition, but might change the stock eventually.

No. 300WM is a hard kicking bitch and expensive to shoot, even if you hand load. Beyond that the gun will be a long action, so heavier than necessary and barrel life is fairly short with magnums (around 1500 rounds).

If you want to get into it cheap, then nothing beats the old fashioned .308 winchester. Recoil is hugely less abusive, range is completely adequate, wind drift isn't ridiculous and it's common as chicken feathers so you won't have any trouble finding match ammo at retail if you don't handload. Barrel life is in the several thousand rounds territory and it's a short action so you can make a complete rifle with optic easily under 12lbs.

Calibre choice is a personal thing in many ways. I do shoot a .308 in competition and it is at a disadvantage to the fast 6 and 6.5mm rounds in some ways for match shooting for score. Don't get caught up in the 6.5mm craze until you're experienced enough to decide is comparatively crap barrel life is something you're willing to deal with as they do suffer from pretty abrupt life spans compared to .308.

Not only no, but FUCK NO!

I had the same rifle...Savage 11/111 LRH in .300WM.  Accuracy was minute-of-barn at 100yds.

Don't listen to this. The 300 WM can kick pretty good but not in Savage LRH. Not with the break it has. Obviously this post has no knowledge of this gun. 1500 round barrel life?? What a joke. And again, not true. And 300 WM is very common, not as common as 308 but pretty damn common. The issues they have had with these rifles has been in the stock. The Accustock is hit and miss but mostly hit. Used to not seat correctly. Also a lot of people aren't checking the factory scope mount bases for correct tightness and thus causing erratic groups. Be careful who you listen too on this site. A lot have lots of info on guns they've never heard of let alone shot. Good luck.

1500 round barrel life is very realistic for a 300WM.

It is also a terrible round to pic for getting into long range shooting.  There are much better options out there for punching paper and banging steel.  Hunting the 300WM still has plenty of merit, but target shooting you're just wasting money.

He also said used for hunting as well. Not sure what rounds youre shooting but Ive seen 300 wm barrels go a lot longer then that. And those weren't heavy barrel rifles either.
