I am just now getting into bolt guns, and have a 700 SPS Tactical 16.5" on the way, along with a Vortex Viper PST.  Now I need to buy some ammo.  I want to get some FMJ, and BTHP.  So, what is the best stuff to stock up on?

Don't 'stock up' on anything until you figure out what it likes. That said, Federal Gold Medal Match (FGMM) in 168 or 175gr. is pretty well the gold standard.

You can never go wrong with Black Hills Ammo.
In 168, or 175gr.

I have shot a lot of their seconds. Never had a issue one. Plus it saves you some green.

Ive never tried black hills
But federal GMM 175 shoots about as good as my best handloads, sub .5 5 shot groups consistantly, unless i screw it up. I frequently get it for 1$  (20$/20shots) a shot from palmetto state armory.
Ps shipping on 4 boxes was 8$ so 88$ for 80 bullets. Well worth it imho

How is the IMI 175GR Razorcore?

ETA:  And what about cheap FMJ for plinking?

For me they shoot fine at 100, but like crap at 1000. (ref: https://www.ocabj.net/precision-rifle-project-remington-700-update-04/)

My 700 likes 168gr GMM.  Both targets at 100yds.

Earlier this year a 5 shot group w/ same 168 GMM. After 20 yrs I'm not as steady as I once was and the eyes aren't as sharp. Other ammo tried that day was all over the place.

I second this.  FGMM (168gr) is the favorite of my bolt gun, period.  Like another posted, find out what your rifle likes prior to stocking up; a "taste test" if you will.

My .223 loves their reman 50gr V-Max. Never tried reman .308, but their match 175gr shoots really well.

168 FGMM. I've tried A LOT of factory ammo as I seek precision, but don't hand load . Black Hills is stellar in my semi autos but did not perform in my 700.

I would try Copper Creek. I've heard better than FGMM, but I think they only offer 175s.

My 26" varmint sps like 175 fgmm. And my meridith custom with 21" bartlein barrel loves them as well. I've still yet to get my hand loads to do this

Like other's have said FGMM will typically get you some good results. My suggestion would be to pick up a press and start hand loading.

Don't rule out Hornady 168 A-Max or 178 ELD-X. Am assuming your twist is a 1:10.

I have 308 bolt gun with a 1:11 twist rate.  I'm having very good success with Fusion 180 grain.  My AR10 loves 168 grain.

Fusion 180 Spitzer is my go to deer hunting round. But I've never got anything better than MOA out of it.

Are you going to be reloading?  If so, I'd just get a few hundred rounds of 147/150 grain ball and break in the barrel, zero, and practice with that.  You'll have fireformed brass to uniform, size, etc.

Shot Hornady 168gr BTHP Match the other day. Got 100rds on sale at Midway for a great price.I was pleased with it in my Rem 700-AAC

I shoot a 16.5" Rem and the rifle shows a definite preference for the 168 FGMM ammunition.  It is a very good shooter with my AAC Cyclone attached.

Hornaday Steel Match, 155 grain if I recall correctly.
Quite a bit cheaper than other 'Match' loadings, and surprisingly accurate & consistent

I'd bought a box (50 rounds) for the purpose of breaking in a new barrel.
If I didn't handload, that Steel Match would be high up on my list.

THIS + 1

Mine likes the Federal 168 GMMK. Some other ammo manufacturers use the same SMK bullet, but I have not had the same results. As far as a good hunting round, the Federal Fusion 180 grain shoots better than other popular hunting ammo IN MY GUN.

My Savage 11 loves Federal Premium Vital-Shok with 165 grain Sierra Game King bullets.
