Trying to decide between getting an Axis bull barrel or the model 11 bull barrel. The reason Im conflicted is because either way I go, I'm replacing the stock with a precision one. The Axis is about 250 dollars less. In your opinion, is the model 11 action and barrel good enough to justify the extra 250.00 with everything else being equal? I know the triggers arent equal.

I have the AXIS, I wish I had a 10 or 11. Just more options out there for stocks/chassis and parts.

I have an Axis Bull Barrel in 22-250.   Straight shooter...I left it stock, EXCEPT, I put a Timney trigger on it.  The Axis Bull barrel does NOT come with an Accu-Trigger.  Before conversion, my trigger pull was like 7 pounds, with the Timney, I have it set at 2.

Savage does NOT make the Bull barrel model anymore, I think the profit margin was too small, and since most would change out triggers, it brings the rifle cost up to within $100.00 - 150.00 of the other models.   I just bought it for Coyote hunting...btw, I also have a regular Axis model in 22-250 that shoots just as good as the bull barrel, and it has an Accu-trigger.
The only stock you can get, at my last looking was a Boyds...(wood).  If you want something different (plastic, etc.) you'll need a Model 11.

Were it me (and I know it's not     I would put my money on a Savage Model 10T.  The 10T comes with 5R rifling, a tactical bolt handle, a scope rail attached, and a decent enough stock for now.  Price is around $599.00  .  Save and get good glass. My 2 cents.

Happy Trails!

(OR get a Remington 700 Varmint that has a 26" bull barrel *you'll need to replace the stock, too much flex*  I have Magpul's on mine)    Dicks Sporting goods has regular sales, and Remington has regular rebates that will bring the basic rifle down to $399.

To date the only option for after market stocks is Boyds.  I have two of them, one on a standard axis and the other on a 243 bull barrel (They call it a bull barrel but its really a medium contour IMO).

What is the intended use?
Are you planning any other upgrades?

If this next rifle purchase is for hunting or plinking, then the Axis is fine for that.  If you are planning to build up a target rifle or do a bunch of upgrades I would go with the model 11 since there are more options.

If you are thinking along the lines of a target rifle and you live near a Cabelas go with the Cabelas only/special Savage 12 FV.  You get a 26 inch varmint profile barrel (little thicker than the axis) plus the accutrigger for $419.

I have the Boyds. It's OK. It's also inexpensive.

MDT also makes the LSS chassis for the AXIS.

Right, I forgot about that one.  Probably because they are on the pricey side :)

I actually got a 700 varmint from Dicks and put a magpul hunter 700 on it. Now that was an awesome rifle. But it was so heavy. My hope is the 22 in barrel on the savage will bring the weight down a little.

There is a lot of fail in these comments.  Mostly from those that don't know what they are talking about.

The Axis line never was offered with accutrigger.  If you get the Axis II models, you will get the accutrigger.

Agreed with the poster that stated that Boyd's and MDT offer stocks/chassis for Axis/Edge rifles.

You can upgrade the Axis and the various Savage/Stevens 200 actions.  Upgrading barrels and triggers can be done with both.  The Axis lineup doesn't have a lot of stock options due to it being the budget line for Savage.

I have an Axis that started life out as a 223...it's now a 300BO that I use for hunting.  I have a lot of hours into strengthening the factory stock.  At the time, Boyd's and MDT didn't offer replacement stocks for my Axis.  I reinforced the forearm with steel rods.  I also cut the stock to give me a shorter LOP.

The model 11 and the Axis will both be usable rifles...it just depends on how much you want to spend from the start.

If it was me, I'd buy the most inexpensive rifle to start off with and upgrade as funds allow.

"My hope is the 22 in barrel on the Savage will bring the weight down a little"

The weight of the "stock from factory" Axis Bull Barrel is 8 pounds without scope or ammo loaded.

The weight of the "stock from factory" Remington SPS Varmint with the 26" bull barrel is 8.5 pounds without scope or other crap.

Happy Trails!
