Hey all. I picked up a Rem 700 ADL Varminter the other day. I've been shopping for a .308 bolt gun for a while and finally found this one and decided to go for it. I'm looking for a stock for it now, but don't want to get too crazy for a hobby gun. Here it is:

I am looking at Magpul's Hunter 700. Anyone tried one? Is it any good? The reason I'm leaning that way is because Magpul also has the magwell and trigger guard to convert the present rifle from a blind mag to a detachable AND its 69.95. H-S is closer to 250.00. FUN BONUS: What is wrong in this picture? And I'm not talking about my wife's comforter, I mean whats wrong with the gun? |

The stock is closer to $250. The magwell alone is only $60ish.
HS precision stocks are great. Bell and Carlson are also very nice. You could always go the chassis route but that's even more cash. If you don't hate the stock and the DBM is more important, just go for the bottom metal. What kind of scope do you have? What rings? What bipod? What bolt handle? What we really need to know is how much money we can spend for you

As far as scope goes: I have a PA 4-14x44 FFP Mildot scope right now. I'll use it for a while until I decide what I want. Not that the PA scope is bad. I've had it on my 6.8 for a year now and its been awesome, but it wants to go back. So I need to find something else for the 700. |

There is some flex in the stock, but not enough to cause the barrel to touch the foreend of the stock. I will update you once I shoot it, but like you, I went with a cool looking, practical, affordable build that will allow me to effectively engage steel out to 500 yards (that is my goal once I start shooting this). This is not going to be an ultra precision rig. The stock is not fibreglass bedded, the scope while nice is not high-end but it will get result. So long as my build is capable of consistent 1 MOA, I'll be happy. Let us know what you decide to do. |

As you can see above I went with the hunter 700. I wanted to shoot it with the o em stock before I put the magpul on just for comparison, but I'll put the new stock on before it's first shot |

My new magpul hunter 700 and magwell for the detachable mag arrived yesterday. Less than 24 hours after I put it on order. WOW is all I can say. Way to go Shooter's Warehouse!
Anyway, the installation was so quick and easy I was sure I had done something wrong, so I took it apart and did it again to make sure. When magpul calls this a "drop-in" they aint kidding. The entire installation was a snap. No dremeling needed. Everything dropped in just right. I was impressed by the stock's rigidity. If you've never seen one of these up close and personal, don't think of magpul's forends for AK's and AR, the Hunter 700 is a super solid piece for being polymer. It is also a little lighter than the OEM stock, not by a lot, but I could feel a difference. There is also about an 1/8" gap between the barrel channel and the barrel, extending the full length of the barrel. Ergonomics are a huge improvement. I haven't shot it yet, plan on doing that tomorrow. But here is it is:  " />

Just got back from the range. After an education zeroing mil dot scopes, I got it zeroed. Using 168 Sierra Match Kings, it as well under MOA, I didnt have my micrometer with me, but it looked under .750" with 2 of the holes touching. It was raining and windy so I had to head home. Only managed to put about 10 rounds through it total. But a great first outing.
This is by far the most accurate rifle I have ever fired. Very nice. |

Hit the range yesterday. Here are the results: 2 groups 168gr Sierra Match Kings @ 100 yards
The first group was cold iron, very first shots. As always, ignore the flier  " />
The second group was after I fired about 10 rounds quick to heat up the barrel. The groups pulled a little to the right. The lower holes were me pulling the scope to the left.  " />
All in all, given I am running the OEM trigger and factory loads AND I am not a great shooter, I think the rifle shoots pretty well. |

I have a Rem 700 Varmint that I placed into the Magpul hunter stock and I could not be happier. Have about 400 rds on the gun now at up to 1000 yds.
The only complaint I had originally was not having a 10 round Magazine that would work well. This problem was solved when Magpul released the Pmag 10 AICS. It functions flawlessly in my gun. I did replace the trigger with a Timney 510. I would suggest making that change. It made a world of difference in long range accuracy. |
