Found a Savage Axis locally NIB for $200, figured it would work for a budget build. I put 40 rounds through it in factory forum and the factory barrel and stock left a lot to be desired IMO. I purchased a Savage 10 FCP-K barrel (heavy, fluted and threaded) from a member here for $150 and sold the factory barrel for $120. I ordered a Boyds "Pro Varmit" stock with the adjustable comb came to $196 with the options I choose shipped. Picked up a EGW 20MOA rail $45, Glades Armory knob/bolt handle for $55 and found the Nikon 4-12x40 scope on clearance at WalMart for $145 (I already had the rings and bipod).
How it sits now 
The Boyd's stock goes off to CDi Precision Monday morning for in letting and bottom metal installation - $149 for inletting and bottom metal, $40 for 1 MDT 10rnd magazine. 
Filed a form 4 end of March for a Specwar 762 that will be used on this rifle.. hopefully I get the stamp back by mid July. I'll post some results once I get the stock back from CDi, looking forward to trying it out. Cost re-cap.. Neat build up.
I got my Axis in trade for a bunch of old AR-15 parts. It already had a Timney trigger installed. I have put it in a Boyds stock. Man, I wish they had the adjustable comb when I picked mine up. I've been contemplating getting a heavier barrel for it. The factory 308 barrel is pretty thin for my heavy-assed silencer. It shoots well though if I keep things cool (slow rate of fire). |

Axis uses "small" or "standard" shank barrels and barrel nuts so there is plenty of options there. Timney and Rifle Basix offer replacement triggers.. my factory trigger had a pull weight of over 6lbs, plenty of you tube videos on how to reduce this with a simple spring modification or replacement if you're on a tight budget. As mentioned already it will not drop in to a Savage 10 stock for example but SSS offers a stock, Boyd's has several and MDT now offers a few of their chassis for the Axis. CDi now has a package of a Boyds stock with their DBM package so you can use MDT/AICS magazines. Snyder offers a service to turn factory magazines in to 10rnd magazines (for the 308) if you prefer not to go DBM or a MDT chassis. The Savage 10 bolt handle will fit but it's not a tight fit and does not look right IMO, Glades armory offers a replacement handle and several knobs that offer a factory fit, worth the $55-$65 IMO. Nice platform for a budget build IMO. |

Ordered a Harris bipod off the EE for this rifle as I stole the cheap eBay knock off from my .22 for the picture and my SilencerCo brake came in.. May have to throw it all back in the factory stock to see what kind of groups I can achieve. I'll throw up pics if I can make it to the range. Edit: No go, barrel OD is a lot larger than the factory barrel, I'd have to take a belt sander to the factory stock to get it to fit.. not worth the effort I'll update once the Boyd's stock comes back from CDi. |

Yeah I got that but budget doesn't mean bottom of the barrel. I mean even the rings that came with my Nikon were way better than those shit weavers. Also 1360$ isn't exactly budget. I mean 40 bux for a mag and 10 for rings. You need to prioritize. Also great looking rifle BTW, well except the rings

I intended to go with a decent set but wanted to have the rifle setup in the new stock before I order them (wasn't sure what height to order). |
| In FL for the week on vacation I was able to stop in to CDi Precision and pick up my stock. Jeff and Pam were a pleasure to deal with, quality work, very friendly; I would highly recommend them. Ill get my rifle assembled when i get home, hope to take it out this Sunday. |
Got a chance to reassemble my rifle and take some pics. Added the Harris bipod, and timed the SilencerCo muzzle brake. Have some things to do around the house today and need to pick up some ammo but will try to go to the range this afternoon. Found a local shop that has Burris XTR rings in stock, going to pick-up a set tomorrow after work.. while they're not Badger or Seekins I'm sure they're higher quality than the current rings and should work well for a budget build.

Stopped after work yesterday and picked up a better set of rings and some caps for the scope. Ended up going with Leupold PRW rings 1" low, seemed like nice rings for $45. Either way better than what I had before.. Did a rough bore sight in the basement.
Had a chance today after work to run to the range and try and sight it in. Didn't realize but I grabbed 1 box of 308 and 3 boxes of 6.8. Hopefully get back out this weekend and play around, either way I'm very happy with the rifle now. Miles better than it was in factory config in every way, should be fun after my form 4 comes back for my Specwar 762

My form 4 cleared and had a chance this week to go down and pick up my Specwar 762. Went to the range after work to try it out, only had cheap zq1 ammo so I stuck to shooting steel @ 100. Going to swing by Cabelas today or tomorrow and pick up some quality 308 ammo to see what kind of groups I can pull.

I just rebarreled my Axis as well.
I have the same stock, except no cheek riser (unfortunately). My Axis had the lightweight barrel profile and I couldn't get it to group consistently at all (probably heat related). Not wanting to spend a ton of money on an unknown (to me) action, I picked up an inexpensive Bison Gunworks barrel (25" 308, 1:11 twist) I'm happy with the results. It really likes the 168gr AMAX. I'll be working up some loads to see what else it'll do. Overall average for the day (13 or so 5 round targets) was right at 1". AMAX was .55 and .82. (only had 10 rounds, I forgot my other box :( ) Now, I need to work on MY consistency.

Re Enforced the forend with spring-loaded steel rods, added epoxy to set them in place. Then filled to stock hollows with more epoxy. Going to get the Boyd's stock, and have the inletting done. The rebarrel will happen too.

Stage 2 complete. Base, Rings, Boyds stock.
Next is the trip to CDI for the bottom metal & 2 mags. Then Better optic...then Douglas barrel from 4D barrels. $315.00, and rent their barrel blocks & spanner wrench. |

5 ton epoxy from hardware store. Metal rods were from a shelf unit. Drilled holes with a ball cutter on a dremel.
Drilled the holes with the center ones lower than the ends, causing the rods to spring-load the stock away from the barrel. Then set them in place (with some cussing), and then epoxied the junctions. It kept the forend from flexing enough to prevent contact with the barrel on the bipod when I got in position. Then I ordered a boyds stock, cause that factory stock sucks. |

What kind of groups have you been able to get and with what ammo? Are you happy with the Boyd's stock? My LGS can get me an Axis Heavy Barrel 308 for $321 out the door and I really want to get one and build it but others have told me I should spend more and go with the Savage 10/110 line. |
| 10/110 will have the AccuTrigger out of the box, as will the Axis 2. Axis/Axis 2 might actually have the less flexible receiver, being based on a tube, rather than the traditional open receiver on the 10/110. Axis has Timney available. Axis doesn't seem to be bad to build on @ all - 10/110 will have the larger aftermarket for stocks, etc. They all take the same bbls - all Axis are long action bolts; 10/110/111 action vary on length of bolt/action. |

Thank you for the info. I am aware of the differences between the Axis line and the 10/110 line. I am also aware that the specific Axis model I am interested in comes with a standard trigger (which some prefer over the Accutrigger after a simple spring change or trim). I was interested to know what how the accuracy compares, and I don't expect it to perform at the level of a high end precision rifle.. |
