| Just picked up my first real .308 bolt action... and I'm kinda wanting a sling so I can keep my rifle on me at all times going down range to check on targets or for just deer hunting. Was recommended via PM to get the Rifles Only FTW sling, but that's like $145! Are good slings really worth that much?? Any recommendations? |

If you just want a carry strap, then the field is wide open for low budget choices. Head over to a store with a hunting section and pick the gimmick that appeals most.
If you want to use the sling to stabilize the rifle while you shoot, then a fast adjusting carry strap can provide a field expedient option (google "hasty sling"). More stable yet is a proper loop sling. The 1907 sling was the original design and is still quite popular. I actually like the dirt cheap USGI style web sling that was issued during the later parts of WW2 through Vietnam because it is a little faster to use than the 1907. If you go with the top of the line modern slings you get a 5 second speed advantage. As far as stabilizing the rifle, the function of all these options are the same. I recommend practicing with a loop sling if you want a wider selection of positions to choose from when you shoot. |

Learning the proper techniques of using a sling in all positions is an art in and of itself. That said, rock a TAB or TIS for 100.00. I'm sure the Rifle's Only is great because of the bungee on portion, though I've never used it. IIRC, it helps "suck" the system closer to your shoulder. If you're willing to spend 100, what's another 30.00? That being said, are you going to use it that much? Shooting in competitions makes owning a quality sling a foregone conclusion, if you need to simply carry your rifle, grab the Claw (I have one on my hunting rifle)...it works very well for 20.00. |

I use a Short Action Precision (SAP) Sling. It's $90. However, like others have said, if it's just to carry a rifle downrange then look for something cheap.

As stated either a WWII web sling for the M1/M14 or the M1907 sling. Turner Saddlery is still the current manufacture for the Army. Here's couple I've run on my Mk13 .300 Win Mag and M14 NM (pictured with my son). Used that same M14 National Match at the All Army Matches couple years later shooting it out to 1000 yds with irons and the M1907 sling.

+3 on the Turner Saddlery 1907 sling. I have one that I swap back and forth between my 700pss and my Garand when shooting Matches. It's not hard how to figure out how to use it, and when you do it works wonders! |

When it comes to 1907 slings... Ron Brown or Les Tam. http://www.servicerifleslings.com/
Also available from Creedmoor Sports. For simplicity... USGI web sling. |
