I know some of you have probably watched the THLR.NO channel on youtube. He has a long range rifle blog on his channel that includes a long range proficiency test. I've been wanting to do it for a while, but yesterday mom and I both finally had the same day off so we gave it a go. I'm actually off all week burning up vacation from last year that has to be gone by March or I lose it, but she has to work today Here is a link the THLR.NO video with description of the long range proficiency test rules I was using a 12" wide silhouette target which is a little bigger than he usually uses and I'm pretty sure we had nicer weather than he typically shoots in so I set the target up at 620 yards. The first attempt I hit it cold bore, but both of us thought the other one was going to start the timer. I took my time and by video it looks like I got it in just under a minute. You are suppose to score yourself by where the hit is on the plate, but due to mirage we couldn't see where the hit was on the plate. I had only planned on doing the one attempt and since I hiked the target out there I wanted to shoot a group with some loads using some improved loading techniques that resulted in better concentricity so I can't say which shot was the "long range proficiency test shot". After that we decided to do a 2nd attempt at that test. If a 2nd attempt is needed it must be at a target at least 25 meters further out. So I hiked out the target 45 yards further. I forgot my paint can so I just flipped the target around to the back side. lefty-weaver-g19 video of 2 attempts at long range proficiency test Obviously this isn't official, but it was fun for something different to do. |

Im envious lefty. Been waiting months to get on a waiting list to a range 4 hours away. There aren't many ranges here either. This video was done on public land. It's a lot of work to hike out where no one else is willing to go to set up a range. It has to be that way to make sure it's safe. We also have done a lot of traveling to shoot, but to be honest I'm a little tired of traveling. We have gotten permission to shoot on private land in the past and have a couple invites to shoot on a "farm" range as well as a range to 800ish that we haven't visited yet. Because of so much travel to shoot over the last 2 years including 3 out of state trips dedicated to shooting long range we need a little break. We will still shoot close to home, but nothing beyond 1000 yards. |

I travel 4 hours east and I'm at this range in Illinois...http://www.elmorestockfarmoutfitters.com/shooting-ranges/ |
