Does anyone know/remember how to make a mil stick? For reference, you guys that went to a formal long range precision school, sniper school being one, may remember it. We used a mil stick to measure the numbers and lines in the M22 bino's so that we could mil with them. The problem is, I don't remember how to make the stick. All I remember is that is was a meter high pole with white and orange painted on it in different lengths. We'd set the stick up, how far I don't recall, then look at it with the binos and used the white and orange to measure the thickness of lines, height of part of the number 1, etc. I don't remember the measurements and was hoping someone could help me out. There was a thread down in marksmanship where someone asked about using a regular duplex scope to estimate range and I suggested using a mil stick to find out how many mils wide/tall the reticule is. That suggestion isn't going to help much if I can't remember how to make the stick.
I can only remember it being referred to as a mil stick and it may have a different name. I tried googling it and there's nothing out there using that name. There are plenty of guys here with more knowledge than me so I'm hoping someone knows what I'm talking about. |

I made a Mil and MOA comparison target for my last course.
Since a Mil is 3.6" at 100yds, you can make a stick with 3.6" increments with varying colors, and form a stick like that, or use a 36" yardstick to equal 10 Mils at 100yds. Use a LRF to get the distance exact, and check reticles that way. If using meters, it's simply 10cm = 1 Mil @ 100m. |
