Saw a .308 788 with ram line synthetic stock for $400 locally.
I have always heard these were under rated budget guns, has anyone modified one at all? Do any 700 parts interchange? |

Haven't modified it, but yeah, for the price, my 30-30 is very accurate, smoother action than a 700, and the trigger is way better than any 700 trigger I've touched(although I've never shot an older 700, just 1990s and up)
Mine is in original configuration. Stock is beat, and I've actually been considering yanking it apart and refinishing it this year or next. |

One of my very first guns was a barreled action 788 LH in 6mm Rem. At the time (1977) there were very few left handed rifles (Savage,Remington, Weatherby) and in limited calibers. Being young and not having a lot of spending money, and wanting a duel purpose rifle. I bought a 6mm Rem barreled action ( $100.00). I did not like the stamped sheet metal trigger guard and exposed magazine, so I machined one out of solid steel at a friend of mines machine shop. I then sent it out to Bishop's (stock maker no longer in business ) and had a semi finished stock made for it. The nice thing was I could have it made the way I wanted Niedner steel buttplate and grip cap, and a 16" length of pull. ( I am 6'9" tall). I hunted with it for several years, it was very accurate but I felt it was too light for deer and got a Ruger #1 in 30-06. My brother in law has one in 22-250 and has taken chucks out to 400 yards. Mod 700 parts do not interchange it is a totally different action |

I love the rifles and have owned several . Every one were excellent shooters .I love the fact they have detachable magazines. They have an issue with breaking the bolt handles off . They reportedly dont like stiff loads , as the bolt lugs are on the rear .....but at the same time , I've read that the rear lugs allow for a slight bit of head float , allowing the head to center up a bit more . Not my theory , but it kinda makes sense. When I lived in Michigan , I used my fairly stock 308 (with a cracked fore end) to take two 2nd place trophies in 100yd Hunter class I started an F-Class project three years ago . I had my friend and smith chamber a Lilja bull barrel in 6BR . . . . but that's as far as I made it...been sitting in the safe since I think Ive had 7 or 8 788's over the years , but now Im down to one 308 hunter and the 6BR project.....and a bare action with no bolt I picked up cheap, years ago. So yeah....put me down as a 788 fan for life. |
