I just finished a night time match with my pistol and went to take off the light and it got me thinking.  Would leaving the light on help with follow up shots?  I know I’ve read somewhere that weight up front helps, so should I just leave it on?  Is that legal in tactical optics?

Depends on the rules of the match. Under most IMA rules this would be OK, but the light would have to remain on the gun for the entire match. Just bear in mind that extra weight has a downside - the gun will be slower to transition. I'm sure you are not the first person to think of this option, so the fact that you don't see lights on the top competitors' guns should tell you something.

Would it actually help control muzzle flip?  It doesn't affect side to side transitions for me at all since its only a few oz.

More weight can dampen muzzle flip but not as much as a proper grip.  3 gun isn't win or lost in double taps.  It's won by hitting steal on your first and only shot.

Another thought, if you run a light on that gun for say work, HD / SD; then this is really good practice.
