Hello all.   I purchased an AR last year and have been looking at the 3 gun information available online.
In looking at the Trijicon ACOGS- there seem to be alot of options.
I have the Colt CRP 18, so I don't have the flat top.

Any recommendations in terms of the ACOG's?   Which model is easiest for 3 gun?
Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks

I wouldn't choose a fixed 4x power scope like an ACOG for 3-gun.

Aren't the 1-6X variables the choice of the pros?  The Z6i Swarvoski is very highly regarded for 3-gun.

A quality 1-4 or 1-6 should be ideal...

I personally would not do an ACOG.  They do not offer what you are looking for in a 3G setup in my opinion.

I went with the Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24.  That is a nice piece of glass for $500.  I cannot imagine how much better the razor is for $1200 more.

Try as many out as you can and find one that is FAST for you.  Good luck.

S&B 1-4X24 Zenith Short Dot FD7 > Vortex.

Buy once and cry once. The glass on Vortex are not consistent IMHO.

Holy piss!  I would definitely be crying. $$$

I am by no means an expert in 3gun.  I have only participated in six matches.  I run an ACOG TA11 (3.5 maganification) and Dueck Defense 45 degree angled sights.  So far this has been a great setup for me.  The Duecks were great on one particular stage where there were clay pigeons in the middle of a no shoot (white) USPSA target at 5, 15, and 25 yards.  The every next stage had us shooting from a simulated barricade and then a roof top at 220 yards and 165 yards.  The ACOG did its part at that range.  But again, I am no expert.

How serious are you about 3 gun and how much $ do you want to spend?

If I were you my first purchase would be a flat top upper.  Then a variable power scope.  ACOG'S are old school with all the 1-4, 1-6, and now 1-8X scopes out there.  I would rather see you get a Burris Tac30 for $300 and use the leftover $ on a dedicated upper.

ACOGs are great optics in many ways but they are not the best for our game. A fixed power optic is goingto be less than ideal in a lot of situations. Get a good 1-4 or 1-6 like the others have said.

Swarovski Z6i
Trijicon T24
Vortex Razor HD
Leupold MK6/8
Elcan Specter

Optimal 3 gun optic?  I know this is highly a matter of personal opinion, but input from the veterans and especially the top shooters is very much appreciated.

Not a pro but can tell you that more Pros are using the Swarovski  than any other scope. The Vortex Razor is also a great scope I own both.

Do you prefer one reticle over the other?  I have read that the Swaro reticle is larger and covers targets at distance.

What mount do you use for each?

I just picked up the Burris MTAC and my buddy picked up the tac30 2 weeks ago the only reason I went with the MTAC is I found it for the same price as the Tac30.
No range time on either due to lack of time. But we plan on trying them out this coming sat.

I just shot out to 500 yards today in preparation for the Surefire Texas Multigun match and no the reticle on the Swaro does not cover too much of the target.

Much of this depends on how much you feel you can afford to spend on an optic.  Also, as you don't have a flat top upper you will need that to.  You might consider a Burris M-Tac, not the choice of  champions, but if you are buying it yourself and not shooting your sponsors product then it is a good compromise.  Also, in most of the shoots I shoot in (Mid-Atlantic) there are relatively few 300 Yd+ shots.  I see very little advantage to more than 4X inside of 300 yds.   Now, if your local clubs have a lot of really long shots at relatively small targets your situation may warrant the big magnification and big bucks.

Mounting a good solid optic low to the bore (with ARs this is a relative concept) is probably more conducive to getting hits at varied distances than having the very best glass.  Also key is knowing our holdovers, so shoot a lot and study your data really well.  If you know hour holdovers and the rich guy nest to you doesn't you can beat a Swarovsky with a Bushnell.  Of course, a great shooter with optimum equipment will beat you, but then you probably guessed that already if you are asking the question you asked.

Im no Pro but Jesse Tischauser is and he shoots with them. The Mtac is a great glass +1. Only thing I Could add to this is what range are you shooting at? if its a local group and not over 50 yards, get a red dot. Go to a local shoot and talk with people, they always want to talk about their set ups and what is good and bad.

Ditto on the Burris 1-4x24 MTAC also. While I really liked the Vortex Razor HD II 1-6x24 I looked thru at a match I could not find another scope I looked thru under $500 that seemed as bright and easy to use as the MTAC. Managed to pick one up from CTD for only $363 from one of their other wharehouse locations. Have used it in 2 3gun and one 3man 3gun event and have been very happy with how quick I can make shots out to the 300 yards max they have setup.

if you take the time to shoot an ACOG... TA31F with red chevron... it gives you automatic bullet drop at indicated ranges... and the stadia lines subtend 19" at the indicated distances... so each half of the stadia line gives you approximately 10" of wind hold off... the tip (both upper and lower ) of ;the chevron is not obscured by any vertical range line... an illuminated reticle is necessary for the Bindon Aiming Concept which allows you to use it much like a "dot" up close, but you must shoot both eyes open...you track a target, with either it moving, or the gun moving at 1x and then the brain allows a switch to 4x when and if the target stops.... there are no knobs to fool with... at point blank range head shots, the base of the chevron (300m stadia line) held at the top edge of the target will give you an "A" shot....they are pricey, though

I can count on one hand the number of ACOGs I've seen in use at major matches over last four or five years.

The low powered variable dominates the market for a reason, and it's not because ACOGs are $1K.  Seeing 20 $2K Swaros at a match is the norm, but no ACOGs.

I have used them and in practice they are simply slower no way around it. Not a bad combat optic due to being robust and light weight but I would never use one without an off set red dot to use up close and personal.

I LOVE my VX-6 Multigun. The glass is super clear.. Easily the best leupold glass that I've looked through. (I have mark4 vxII and vxIII scopes) I'd say it is as clear as some much more expensive scopes.

My biggest complaint is that the crosshairs are THICK. I was worried about thickness affecting longe range targets but after shooting a few matchs all fears have been laid to rest. The illumination is daylight visible and cranking the scope down to 1x is almost like engaging close range targets with a dot sight. I think it is a too choice for a gaming scope.
