Specifically I'm looking at 2-gun because my favorite range shuts down the tactical bays one saturday a month for 2-gun matches.  I don't own a shotgun, nor to I care to compete in a reloading competition or I would consider 3-gun.

My pistol is a 1911...  that I'm not concerned about.

My rifle is a PSL.  The rules for texas multi-gun would put me in tactical-heavy division.  This is all fine too.  It's suggested to be able to engage targets at 500yd.  For this, I need some better ammo.  I've shot a 1.5" group at 100yd.  But at 200yd, it's not a 3" group.  It's more like a 16" group.  RSO and a buddy of mine (have both spotted for me at 500yd) figure I'm looking at about a 36" group at 500yd.  This is likely bullet quality.  The longer it's in the air, the more imperfections will affect the trajectory. (or so some friends have suggested this is the problem.)

So I'm looking for better PSL ammo.  Does anyone have suggestions?  I've put czech and bulgarian surplus through it and it runs them fine.  But the accuracy at distance is meh.  It makes good practice ammo, but I need something better for long distance.

Ideally someone who's used a PSL in a multi-gun match will tell me exactly what I need to do, but this is the internet...  that never happens  :)

At Texas Multigun, you could shoot plain Tactical if you want to. But I wouldn't.

If the groups are 1.5" at 100 and 16" at 200, then there is a sight/target problem. Fix that first. Loose scope, reticle not stable, parallax, something.

Other than that, I assume your PSL is 7.62x54R and a 3-gun forum may not be the best place to ask about good ammo, since that cartridge is not common in 3-gun. That said, at Texas Multigun, most targets will be 100 yards or less, and only one stage per match will go beyond that, and very few targets are beyond 200. We use 4 MOA minimum, so that is 20" at 500, but the 100-200 yard targets tend to be LaRue FAST targets or a C-zone steel, so bigger than 4 MOA.

out at best of the west at the 250yd range I can hit the larue targets 4/5 times, and the missed shot is usually high (likely because the thin barrel on the PSL is heating up and causing vertical stringing).

I'm glad to hear that most of the targets will be 100yd or less.

I'm asking elsewhere about ammo as well.  I asked here for insight into the matches and on the off chance that someone had experience with 7.62x54r at distance.

I'll head out to the range this week some evening and put the rifle through it's paces again with troubleshooting in mind.  Though I already feel better knowing most of the targets are 100yd or less.

Thanks.

Don't let the shotgun part scare you off. Frankly its more than just reloading. Shooting fast also helps. Plus with the new load two vests its very easy to learn to load fast. Just comeon out and have fun. Someone will loan you a shotgun. I always carry spare gear for new shooters and I am sure there are those iny our area who do as well.

By not shooting shotgun you are starving yourself of the most fun tactical/action shooting there is.  Get a load two type setup and you can load a shotgun as fast as anyone in a few hours.

I agree. I love the load two vest and new caddies I got. It greatly improved my reloading speed over the standard caddies for weak hand loading.

It would be cool to see you shoot a PSL.  That would be the first time I seen anyone run that style of weapon in Heavy Metal.

Stock cheek-weld is horrible so I have a leather pad to give me something a little higher.  I set it up so that can be rotated out of the way for use of iron sights under the scope.  So I could run this on iron sights for the close-up stuff, and use the glass for distance.
