I'm slowly building up 2nd stick.
I don't compete yet..... I'm currently shooting with. A 12 inch JP hand guard. Its what I got... And since I'm training with it, it works well.. That's all I. Know. Pretty much usin c grip with swivel mount as finger stop... What do most use, Length wise for hand guard? Also any suggestions for brand?....... Don't want to break the bank..... |

My current rifle has a 13" rail on an 18" barrel. In retrospect, I wish I'd gone a bit longer.
The rifle I'm building now will have a 15" rail on a 16" barrel. I'm going to use one of the new Midwest Industries Gen 3 M-Loks, have not yet decided on lightweight vs regular. |
| I use a Samson Evolution 15" rail. 15" seems to be the standard size for 3gun rifles. The longer the better. It allows you to have your hand farther forward, and helps you when bracing the gun against a barricade. Another advantage to me is it allows you to mount lights farther forward on the rifle, were they won't get in the way. Some of the matches I have been to have shoot houses or trenches with overhead cover, so that light is needed. |

For years I stayed with shorter handguards. Worked well and saw no problems.
Then a friend gave me a good deal on an 15" handguard. Made a lot more difference than I expected. Just a lot more real estate to place your hand and with that increased stability for longer offhand shots. Now all my match AR's have at least a 15" handguard. |

What technically makes a longer handgpuard better? Faster transitions? More accurate than shorter? Easier to get and stay on target?......... Does same rule apply for those with shorter arms? You can get your grip out further to drive between targets, also more area to brace against something for longer shots. You don't want the barrel braced against a prop. |
