Hi.  I'm interested in getting into 3 Gun or some form of tactical shooting.  The problem is that I live in California.  Given the restrictions on AR builds in CA, and the need to practice under realistic match conditions (I.e., hi-cap mags, fast mag changes, etc.), should I even bother as long as I live here?  I doubt I'll be travelling out of state to 3 Gun matches.

I have a bunch of other questions about gear selection, etc., but I wouldn't waste your time until I know if 3 Gun is even feasible in CA.

Thanks.

Hi,
It may depend on where you are in state-meaning if there is a local 3G club there. I live in the northern SF bay area and there is a club local to me that hold 3G matches(at the Richmond Rod and Gun Club). I've yet to attend a match. Thay also have practice matches once a month. A shooting buddy of mine in another discipline has shot matches here in state and says the hi cap mag rules are pretty much relaxed/waived. Most folks also use rad-locks and prince 50 screw in bullet button thingys and just make sure to restore it to Cali legal status when leaving the range. Again, I yet have to actually see it in an actual match. I for one would not like to be caught in possesion of hi cap mags. My interest has peaked that I actually retrofitted one of my rifles to 3G config. You might look at it this way, assuming  comparable round counts per stage, we in California will get a lot of practice with mag changes. I shoot a game where it sometimes calls for 20-25 pistol rounds at 5 rounds per mag(Cowboy Wild Bunch) I'm sure there are active 3gun clubs in other "restricted" states, and yes, they have to play 3G in a "restricted" variation at the minimum.

There is a practice match the last Saturday of this month and I am planning to attend. I'll give ya a report then if I make it there.

not an answer to the magazine question, but you might consider promoting a modified 3 gun match using .22lr for the long gun... within state magazine requirements you could shoot a "fun" 3 gun match on 35y pistol ranges... reduced size targets (air soft targets) and 2" and 4" steel plates for the .22lr... we host a match in the Tampa Bay area, and many used the SW 15/22 or .22lr conversions for their regular ARs...

show up at 3gun matches and bring lots of ammo, someone will let you borrow there guns. Other then that Heavy metal is the only way to go in cali .45 10rd mags g21, 1911, M&P, springfield armory, just a few pistols to choose from.  M1a 20rd mags, can still be obtained in ca. and 10rd mags can get the job done. M1a's can be very accurate an reliable!

Its pointless to even consider an AR15 in cali!

You can go 2 ways legally in Ca.  Bullet Button/Radloc or featureless.  With featureless you can use a regular mag catch and normal (hicap) cap mags.  I've seen plenty of guys using featureless (fixed stock, non-pistol grip grip and a brake) and having a swell time.  It might take a little more work, but if you want to 3gun then go for it.

The idea that guys you don't know that well will consistently let you use their $1500 rifle is dubious at best.
