| I'm getting ready to order optics for my 6.8 ARP. It will be for deer & hogs. My question is will a 2-7x33 Leupy VX-R be enough to see hogs in extremely low light situations or do I need more magnification or a larger obj.? Thanks. |

The smallest I'll go is 40mm. Seems like you really use a lot of light when you start going smaller than that. I don't worry so much about the magnification. 7x or 9x would be fine. I'm using a fixed 4.5x now. @ what ranges are most of your shots? Mine will ALL be under 175 yds but most will be less than 100yds. Thanks. |

We try to keep them under 100 but I'll go out to as far as I have to. I'll snap shots at running hogs until I hit them or until I can't see them any more. The farthest I've ever hit anything was 400yds with a 3-9x40 but it was a coyote. If I'm setting up on a feeder or something like that we'll go about 50 yards depending on the layout. Last winter when we were filming with a feeder light I set up at 12 yards but used an Eotech for that one. |

I tried an experiment one time deer hunting by swapping my 3.5-10x50 Vari-X-III for my 2.5-8x36 Vari-X-III to reduce the size and weight. The small objective sucked badly in reduced light, and only stayed on the weapon for that single hunt.
On another occasion, I tried my 2.5-10x24 NXS on an evening hog hunt; absolutely worthless. IMHO, reduced light shooting requires good glass AND big objectives. |
