I went to a buddy's ranch outside of Poth to go on my first hog hunt.  We corned the road in a few spots at two different pieces of land and got back out to hunt.  About dark, we were walking and listening when I heard some oinking.  I sat down and held my gun where it sounded like the pigs were.  It was quiet for a moment when the group of 3 50lb. hogs came out of the bushes about 5 yards from me.  My friend pulled his XD-40 and got one of them, while I pooped my pants in surprise.  Pretty good first hunt.

We went out to the second place with our spotlight and when we got out of the truck we immediately heard rustling.  We went through the pitch black, surrounded by sounds and when  my friend turned on the spot, the hogs were much closer than expected.  I shot my rifle like a goober and missed, but a 120lb. sow got mad enough to charge.  My friend pulled the XD again and missed her with all 12 rounds.  She switched her target to me and I dropped her from about 3 yards off to my left with my .45 Kimber. A second shot put her down for good.

When we cleaned the second pig, she had a 180gr. .40 S&W hollowpoint stuck in her shoulder.  The slug did not expand at all and had driven a mass of hair and fat into the shoulder, but didn't break it.

This was the craziest hunt I have ever been on.  Deer hunting won't be the same

That must have been a bit on the high-pucker factor of a hunt.

Good job on the kills with a handgun!

I would suggest setting up in a tree or the bed of an ATV with some bait in the kill zone you have.  Much safer.  You would hate to have a 300lb boar decide that your .45 irritated him.

I have been charged one time by a wounded boar.  It was at night, I had a surefire on my AR, but was only using the old iron sights.  He was ten yards away when he started his run.  15 shots and he was down.  Most were 55gr Q3131.  I don't know how many hit him, but I would guess about 50% and fewer than that were in vital areas.  The last four or five shots were once he was down and adreanaline induced "to be sure" shots.

I never go anywhere without my AR or AK on my place because of the hogs.

Nice shooting!!

Man that sounded like a blast! I normally carry my Glock 9 with me for a backup to the AR, but after some thinging I began to question it's stopping power. I recently got a Ruger Blackhawk in .357 since I am pretty sure it will put them down for the count.

Hint - JHPs are for people. Hogs are not people. Use .45 hardball. It will dig deep enough to let the air out of a big hog.

Yeah, I had my Colt Trooper with me (.357 Mag) but it didn't have night sights like the .45.  The rounds I hit the hog with went through it, but it was the .40 that didn't.  I was using 185 gr. hydra-shocks and my friend was working with 180 gr. WWB hollowpoints.  That hardball idea isn't a bad one.  Maybe somebody could point me to night sights for a Trooper Mk. III and I could step up the power level?  Brownell's had Python sights, but I don't think they are compatible...

Congratulation on your kills! You were cutting it close.
