I got him back on Sept. 27th but was waiting for the trail cam pics before posting.
My brother went up Monday the 19th and had 6 baits out (3 apiece) by Wednesday. No hits until Monday the 26th when 2 baits got hit during daylight hours. Since he already had a treestand up at the 2nd bait that got hit he let me go after this brute.
Got into my treestand around 4:30 and then sat around and waited. Around 6:00 heard a tree break up hill from me and figured there was either a bear or moose in the area.
Around 7:10 I heard him walking down toward the bait. Within a few seconds I could actually hear him breathing/panting!!! Based on how the treestand was located I didn’t really want him getting into the bait because depending on how he ate my shot would be obscured. Luckily just as he approached the bait he turned perfectly broadside to me and as his he took his next step I shot him (12 gauge, around 25 yards away). He bellowed/grunted and then lurched forward which triggered the trail cam and I think that really startled him more than getting shot. He then ran forward plowing through deadfalls and then crashed to a stop. He let out one more bellow/grunt and exhaled. Total time from when I heard him till when he died was less than 2 minutes. Despite being a much larger bear than my first kill he certainly was less cautious.
With just two of us the drag out of the woods took 3 hrs. (block and tackle was used for a portion) Per a scale an engineer friend of ours built it weighed 375 field dressed.
did some photoshop work on this one to try and reduce the glare from the eyes.
