Since our waterfowl season is now over, and things have quieted down a bit from the Holidays, I thought I would share our annual mid October trip out to Saskatchewan.

Hunting up there is totally unlike hunting at home, first off there are SOOOOOOO may birds it will make your head spin.  Second everything is shot over dry fields (peas and barley are the main 2) the locals really frown on shooting over water as that is the roost areas, and they want to keep the birds in the area.

This year was a little different as the crops were late coming off, they had over 29" of rain there this summer and many fields were too wet to get a combine in.  That all changed the week before we went out, the sun came out and warmed up (low 30's in the am, low 70's in the pm) The combines were out in force, turning the countryside into a giant dust storm, not a nice place to be if you have any kind of breathing problems.

There were only 3 of us in camp, my best friend, his dad and myself, this made for a very nice relaxing week.  Up there the limits are very liberal, 8 ducks per day (only 3 pintails), 8 dark geese per day (only 3 specks) and 20 white geese per day (including blues and Ross geese) with a possession limit of 3X per.  We ate a bunch of birds during the week, and there are always a ton of people coming over for supper in a small tight farming community.  Alot of the birds were gifted to family and friends as they all love these grain fattened birds to put away for the long winter.

Any way on to the pictures......

A wave of white geese working a barley field

Pintails

Whites, specks, green heads and pintails

21 green heads, 3 drake pintails, and some whites

nice pass shoot

Limit of whites with some bonus specks and our "bird boy"

Ouch!    1 week old

The end!

Looks like you guys had an awesome trip! I wanna go on a good snow goose hunt like that one day. I gotta ask what happened to the combine?

If you don't mind me asking, where in Saskatchewan?  I have hunted many times up there around Yellow Creek and Basin Lake.  I have never in my life seen that many birds; ducks and geese!  Except every time we've been up there, there has been snow.  If anyone loves to hunt waterfowl, save your money and make a trip to Saskatchewan; you will not be disappointed!

Combine went up in flames over night, finished the field behind it, came back in the morning and was toast.
