My family and I have endured a couple of rough holiday seasons due to health problems and deaths of family members. This year my immediate family decided to spend christmas weekend at our lakehouse on Toledo Bend. The weekend was filled with family and love, two of the best things one can wish for this time of year.
It was also full of my 10 year old chocolate lab, Daisy. She hasn't hunted the last two seasons, as I have not had the time. Dad and I went out from our place and setup on a point. Watching my ol pup wait in anticipation as ducks worked into the spread, mark the drops, and do what she loves to do made my weekend! It really was theraputic. I seriously think she had more fun than the two of us did out there. The action wasn't red hot, but we still had a blast.

I gotta be honest with you, a string load of greenheads is pretty hard to beat, BUT, some of my best, most memorable hunts have only produced a few kills. Being able to blow air into a plastic thingy that sounds like a duck, having the ducks respond, circling overhead, trying not to look at the birds directly overhead but know exactly what and where they are because of the look on the dogs face, jumping up to shoot, and watching my old mut tear ass through river or pond thats 30 degrees just to make his owner happy! I don't know of any therapy thats better than duck hunting! Many times I have hunted by myself just so I can clear my mind and come back a better father and husband. They say that the worst day hunting is better than the best day at work, and there hasn't been any truer words spoken. For that small, miniscule moment in my life, I am the happiest guy on earth; right besides the happiest dog on earth. Truely the best therapy!
