I'm planning on going after some ducks this year and need some advice on what I need to know and to have.
what I know: I'll be in a marsh, can Id woodies pretty good from side passes head on a little shaky what I have: have waders plugged pump with steel chock tube (imp. cylinder) decoys w/ bag; seveal dake maallards (2 wood one plastic), and a couple browner birds (wood) Liccens, ed Stammp, State Stamp #2 steel shells Alright school me or point we where to go. |

Well, I tend to put out woodie dekes while they are still in the area, but for the most part they are tough to decoy and tougher to call in. They know where they want to get to, and they go there. If their destination is 50yds from your decoys, they will likely not be swayed by your spread, and will go to where they set out to go first. With that being said, plan on decoying birds that can be persuaded: Mallards. To get it done cheaply, you ought to grab a dozen Greenhead Gear HOT BUY mallards. they are like $30.00 for a dozen blocks. They are smallish, but certainly will work.
An I/C choke is good for when the birds are hitting the dekes, but if they prove tough to "finish" and just want to cruise your spread and move on, a Mod tube will be better for those over 30yd. shots. If you decide to try calling ducks, start with a mallard call. for just learning, Haydels makes a call called the DR-85. It doesn't look like much, but it is a good call to learn on. Also, you can get an instructional CD with it to learn. No matter what gear you run, some key things: keep still. keep camouflaged. Remember that your hands and face are easily distinguishable to the birds, so I wear a mask or don facepaint. You can get some hunting tips and IDing tips from ducks.org (DU site). Cheers |
