Who's going? We can now hunt with dogs for fall turkey. Has anyone done this before? This will be my first year to try for turkeys in the fall. What are some of the tricks of the trade both with and without using a dog? |

Since it's not mating season, the horny hen call doesn't do anything. You won't be able to lure a tom, they won't care. Basically, the contented grazing clucks reassure that nothing bad is going down. A lost hen call can work too. here.....www.american-hunter.com/Articles/lg_0898.htm a good summary As far as using dogs...no idea how that works. |

A good turkey dog is HARD to come by... Locate flock...either through preliminary scouting, or using the dog's. Find flock, run right into it, or have the dog flush the birds. The more directions they scatter, the better. Sit down, with dog at your side and camo'd. Wait3-5 minutes. Begin sequesce of assembly calls. Kee Kee run...high pitched sequence of a young bird, I'm here, where are you kind of thing. They come back, you shoot one. Without a dog, knowing the morning routine of your local flocks is key. Find the roost, put them to bed, and see where they got to feed / dust in the morning. Look for scratchings and dust bowls. I never knew anyone with a dog that was good enough to do it and sit still the whole time. |
