I'll get ya a kill pic. soon on this thread

I've kicked around gettin an AR barrel reemed as I load every year for a farmer friend in 17 Rem. It's all good as he knows factory rnds. run $25.00 for 20

22 gr. RL-10, Hornady cheap 25 gr. HP 7/1/2s  print nice out of his BDL. not quite as good out of the TC.

I use jugs of RL-10 for 223 40-50 gr. pills so alls well.

gotta keep those land owners happy. I'll post pic's of his property later this year, kinda park like when he mows around the pond. wife and I camp there a few times a year.

I used to have a Sako Vixen in 17 Rem, but sold it in deference to a Rem 700 VLS in 17 Fireball. Unfortunately it is now also gone as it had a bad chamber from the factory and they cannot fix it so they are buying it from me. I still have a Model 7 Predator in the 17 though. Taking it with me in two weeks to shoot prairie dogs. My shooting buddy is a 17 nut though. He has the following:

17 Rem

17 Fireball

17 Ackley Bee

17 Javelina and a few others that I don't remember.

keep us posted on that 17 AR. I often give those 17 Shilen barrels a hard look at Midway.

That DPMS barreled 204 I put together is a shooter with lite pills 30-32 with RL-10

I liked the Sako, but it got hot real fast! I can get 2 times the number of rounds off before the Fireball gets as hot. The problem with the VLS was that it had a ridge in the chamber that imprinted into the case body. Why they couldn't put a damn fluted barrel on it is surprising to me. I'm gonna keep an eye out for another Cooper to replace it though.

Little doggie shot head on with the Fireball

I wish I had a fresh kill to show.

I bought my Rem 700 .17Rem from Fred Moreo in '99 and put a Weaver V16 on Leupold rings on it. Right away I had fouling issues with factory ammo. After 20 rounds or so the bullets would keyhole.

I called Fred and he suggested trying a moly coat in the bore and coating the bullets also.

It solved the fouling issue for good and I clean it a lot less than before.

I'm using Rem. cases, Hornady 20gr Vmaxs, IMR 4320, CCI primers:

17 Remington 20 grain Vmax    20 gr.  .185 B.C.

Range (yards)    Muzzle    50    100    200    300    400    500

Velocity (fps)    4325    3986    3672    3109  2611  2165  1766

Energy (ft.-lb.)  831     706       599    429    303    208    138

Trajectory          -1.5    0.5     0.0    -1.1   -5.8    -15.6 -32.9

Come Up          -1.5     0.9        0.0     0.5    1.8     3.7     6.3
The longest confirmed shot I've made with it is 253 yards.

There's got to be a few more of us here....

P08, every time I read a thread that you post in I lose 5 minutes of my life staring at your avatar.

I've been using 30gr Bergers but I want to try a 25gr this summer. I switched to the 17Rem several years ago when I was getting good money for fur. The load I have now works well if I do my part, but if i don't get a solid hit the bullet makes a nasty exit hole. I switched to 30gr bergers 'cause I thought i could prevent damage to fur by slowing the round down a little, but that kinda defeats the purpose of shooting the 17Rem.
But if the price of fur doesn't come up it won't matter anyways....

Exit with 30gr bergers...

great pic's lungbuster. You live in very nice country out there! Big yotes out that way also.

Do you get out callin with your son much or is he busy chasen the girls? LOL

I've been running Berger 30 gr. Varmints in the 204.

I also use the little .224 30 gr. in a 22-250 for work in crowded areas shooting under 300yds.

Did'nt see any yotes this morning by the sheep barn I was set up by 6 am. a little late on my end. Did'nt see anything except turkey.

I'll get out and pull some cards out of trail cams here after lunch if anything is interesting I'll post'em

I imagine that is going to slow down as he starts meeting college girls though.....

IMO, where the .17 really shines is with the 20 grainer.

Fast and flat, superb terminal performance  4325 fps is what I've chrono'd my loads at. It's typically bad medicine for 'chucks.

Give the Hornady 20 grain Vmaxs a try.

Maynard, I'm worried about splashing on the shoulder using the 20grainers on coyotes. Any experience with that?

I'll drop down to the 25gr bergers and see how they do. I want to get my speed up so I'm pretty much flat out to 250/300 yards or so. I killed a coyote at 300 yards last year, i think that is about the limit for that little bullet and still have the energy to kill without the coyote running off a couple hundred yards.....

that's ok. still it's a 17. I had a CZ American in 17 HMR.

Had brain fade and let a friend talk me out of it. I'll most likely pick up a cheaper model Savage or Stevens in the future.
The CZ shot very well with 20gr. CCI

the 17 gr pills from the hm2 and hmr should be very interesting in the 17R.  Like to know the speed on those.

Did someone say 17HMR? Don't shoot mine much but this is my farthest shot, 225 yard headshot.

Haven't shot that thing in years, I might look at selling it. Kinda forgot I had it untill I read this post.....

I had a rem 700 classic in 17 rem for about 8 years

it  made crows look like a grenade blew up inside a feathered pillow.    the 20grain Vmaxs did great but i never had much luck with the 25s at the time

I have a 700 BDL from '82 or '84(IIRC) in mint condition with Leupold rings and bases with an old Tasco 4-16.  Shoots 5 into .75 with varget and Vmax's. I gave $575 for it about 5 years ago I dont think it was hardly
ever shot and came in to the gun shop as part of an estate.

I picked up a box of Rem 17 ammo opened the box to make sure none were missing and one case had no primer not even a flash hole. Got them to knock some off the price and put it in my collection.
