There are at least two woodchucks living around my girlfriends house, and tonight her land lord gave me the green light to blast everyone I see. I don't know much about "hunting" woodchucks since I usually shoot them as targets of opportunity and not on purpose.

My questions to you guys are:

Are woodchucks creatures of habit? I have seen one between 5pm and 7pm two of the last three nights in the same place. Will it show up about the same time everyday if I leave it alone from now (I snuck up on it using cars as cover and got about 8 yards from it tonight since I couldn't help myself?

Should I continue looking for their hang outs and dens or am I over educating them and making them harder to kill? I kicked one up this evening, after I spooked another/the same one an hour earlier, but couldn't shoot it because it was between me and my girlfriends house/cars. I followed him into her garage so I know where at least one lives.

Also what are their active times?

Thanks for the help and bear with me since I know I'll have more questions.

I'm kind of assuming you mean ground hogs. I guess you see their burrows and their trails. Should see them coming out to graze in the morning and late afternoon. Happy hunting.

Round up some 50 gallon drums and fill them with water.  Then find a hole and start filling.  You'll find the other end pretty quick.

Another option is smoke bombs, but I've never really been a fan of them.

I regularly hunted them a few years ago with a .410 and I found that was about perfect for them.  They do have habits and you can almost predict where they will be most of the time.

Have fun and be safe

I've used a live trap baited with apple slices with good results.
