This morning on Michigan firearms opening day.  450 bushmaster at a little over 160 yards. Not my personal best on my property but my first 11 pointer here.

Northern deer a HUGE compared to our SC swamp deer.

I'll get a weight when I take it to the processor.  Last buck was 170 lbs dressed and hanging for 4 days.  I suspect this one will go closer to 200 lbs.

I pull jaws and weigh deer as a responsibly as guide.

On the hoof a giant deer here is 190#.  Does are around 85-100lb. Most harvested deer are 4.5 years old.

Is that the Savage 212/220?  Thinking about getting one to replace the .300 BO since 80yrds is a long shot on my placed and it might open up a couple of directions to shoot in.

185 lbs at the processor last night.  Getting donated to Hunters Fighting Hunger.  I shoot 1.5 year old corn and bean fed doe's in the late December season for the freezer.  They taste much better than a rutted up 5 year old buck.

Yeah, 220. I have no issues with it whatsoever. I used 250 grain Remington/Barnes Premier Expanders on the second doe. She went 50 yards and tipped over. The slug passed through after taking out both lungs.

Well, I replaced my hammer spring on the 6.8.  It has a JP national match trigger in it with the reduced power spring, so now it's a standard spring and the trigger is 1/2lb or so heavier now.  Going out to try a different area this afternoon.  Should be peak rut in my area today.

Welp,  I’m gonna need a damn intervention..... missed a buck tonight 3 point on one side other half of rack broken off. Thick woods about 85 yards out might have hit a branch IDK may have just missed. Was using a new Ruger 300bo bolt action mainly due to sitting in a double tree stand with my 9yo son and he felt comfortable shooting it, I was gonna allow him to shoot if he wanted. At that distance in those woods he decided for me to take it. Problem was it was about 10 minutes until too dark and I had to practically lay over him to take the shot.

I actually also got a little buck fever , haven’t had it since I was a teen but I let the fact that this is one of the few days I have off for the foreseeable future due to COVID burning through our force and it’s not like we can run posts short.

I’m really disappointed in myself , first deer I have missed since my teens I’m one of the better shots at work and honestly any other time would have waited to see how close he would work but due to the above listed scenario I didn’t...

I took that bolt action so he would be comfortable , I’m getting him familiar with either my LWRC 556 or my Armalite 6.8 for the next time, whenever that may be

I have to work all day tomorrow so he’s going with his my FIL, hopefully they get some meat....

I got these two last Monday.  The past five seasons, I've used a AR15 in .223 and did well.  This year I took my AR15 in .350 legend.  I shot the buck at 112 yards.  The bullet went in behind his right should shoulder and came out where the chest and neck meet.  He went about 10 yards.  The doe, on the other hand, was a fighter.  I hit her broadside at about 20 yards.  She took off running like she was on fire.  I hit her again while she was on the run, but she still ran 120 yards.  I was using the Hornady 170 grain spire point American Whitetail factory load.

Was just going to ask the same thing, what is your zero distance on the rifle @sts900?

You can get a pretty workable trajectory with the right zero, and with the wrong zero it has a pretty big arc to it.   I have my 16" AR set up for a 50yd zero with 125gr Noslers going 2100FPS.   Other than the initial offsite for the optic over bore at point blank ranges, I'm within +/-1" of point of aim from 25 to 150 yards.   150 is what I would consider my max range with this set up, as the bullet is loosing energy really fast at that point, and also dropping fast (more than 2" every 25 yards).

That sounds about right but I would bring the range into 100. The 300BO is a glorified pistol round and doesn’t really reach into the rifle performance realm in my opinion. It just loses energy so fast.

100% agree.   I've got 6 kills with it so far, ranging from 5 yards to about 75.   I would prefer to stay under 100, but have given myself the 150yard limit to get my brain already hard coded not to try something stupid at longer range if buck fever sets in.     Also, sorry for the @ tag to you, meant for the other poster and got the wrong one.

Filled my South Dakota east river rifle tag saturday morning.  Ruger American Predator, 6.5 CM, Hornady 143gr ELDX, 260 yards.
21.5" inside spread.  Land owner said he had a larger rack last year, so guessing he's 5.5-6.5 years old.  Worn down teeth and really grey in the face, ears, and neck.
As usual, a hot doe this old warrior's downfall.

Yea. It was thick woods and the ridge he was angling down made him look closer I walked it last night after work and it was around 110 yards. Pretty sure  I shot under him.

Agreed.  Have a good taxidermist but that for the first at 49 years old only opens up “bigger and better”.  There’s two more 10’s on our place that I see regularly and a lot of really wide 8’s.  I shot my fair share and simply pop a doe or spike for meat every year.  Guess we will see where this goes.  Glad to get her into the sport for her later than never though.  Attachment Attached File
