I've hunted for a few years now and for some reason this issue finally started concerning me. What do you guys do when you need to pee while hunting. I hunt from a tree stand 90% of the time and when I need to go I usually just let fly from up in the tree trying to get it all onto the ground. I'm kinda starting to wonder if this is counter productive.
And yes I always piss before I head out to the field but always end up needig to go sometime during my sit. So what do you guys do? |
I wear a adult diaper and just piss my pants.
Actually, I just piss off my tripod, out the door or window of the stand or in a bottle. It doesn't hurt anything, I've actually had deer walk up while I was mid stream. Holding it in is a bad idea. You body has to keep that liquid warm so holding it in will actually make you cold. |

I normally just piss right off the stand. I like trying to spell my name on the ground below.
Seriously, there has been plenty of test/experiments proving that it doesn't bother deer to smell human piss. It doesn't even alert them. If anything it peeks their curiosity! The same test/experiments have been done with bleach, gas, oil, and a shit ton of other chemicals. They all showed that deer are more likely to investigate than run. You can find the test/experiment data online through Google if you look for it.. |
Just out of pure coincidence I had to pee 4 times the morning I posed this question
Too much beer the night before. Anyway I had a doe walk up on me one of the times and I was literally caught with my pants down. After some hoof stomping and snort wheezing she took off |
| It never fails, as soon as I stand up to piss, a deer always pops out. I've killed a bunch of them though, never even phased them. On my caribou hunt we actually hung one of my sweaty used socks on a tree in a herds path. They stumbled upon it and stood around sniffing it long enough for us to get into bow range. |

It's the movement involved, not the scent, that can cause problems. I now hunt from a pop-up blind during gun season, and drink a lot of coffee in the morning. Rather than make all that movement going out of the blind to pee in the woods, I bring a pee bottle instead, and dump it on my way back to my truck. I did the same thing when I used to hunt from tree stands. I've seen fresh deer tracks in the snow, on numerous occasions, that walked right past (within inches) of the yellow snow I left from a pee-bottle dump the night before.
Smoking in the woods is the same thing. IMO, the smoke itself doesn't frighten away the deer, it's them seeing the arm movements of smokers. I was smoking a Backwoods Smokes cigar when I shot a real nice 8pt (140 B&C) from a tree stand at a distance of 30yds, during a gun season when I was also wearing blaze orange. The buck came from downwind where the smoke was blowing, but there was another pine tree in that direction that had me hidden from his view. I heard him crunching the snow as he approached, so I put the cigar under my seat cushion (burning a hole in it ) and had my rifle shouldered when he stepped into view. There was still cigar smoke hanging in the air when I put a 200gr .35 Rem bullet into his shoulder, dropping him in his tracks. He never knew what hit him. |

I pee in their scrapes, or make my own scrape. ![]() this. I set a cam up on a scrape, pissed on it and had several bucks come cover it. I've also gone from the stand 20" up with deer (does) less than 40yds away as long as you're not moving all over they'll pay no mind |

I shot a 8 pt with a bow one time that walked directly to a spot where I had pissed 15-20 minutes earlier. perfect shot at about 15 yards.
now taking your waders down to piss in the middle of a slow day of Duck Hunting is guaranteed to bring a flock of 30 greenheads on top of your group. |
