The location I am hunting is all my father in laws property and is roughly 900 acres in east Texas. My father in law told me that he did not want any does taken because he doesn't think there is that many. Is there anyone in here who has an argument that i can use to show that just because my two cameras with a 40ft night range and 150ft day range has not caught but about 10 of them in the last month it doesn't mean they ain't there?

I will ultimately go with what he says because it's his land but I just don't want to pass us meat on the table.

Kill every doe you see, I do not know how you are not over run.  We should have heeded this advice in the 90s

if you see 9 does and 1 buck...there are 9 does that need harvested.  Reality you will never gt a 1-1 ratio.

Is there a management plan everyone agrees upon? I read an Alabama doe management article that said between 40-60% should be harvested for a good ratio. Again that's Alabama and not Texas.

you should always strive for 1 to1 which is impossible to achieve

I would respect his wishes. I do agree with others here about ratios and such but it's his land. It does sound like he is old school and still doesn't believe in shooting doe. I believe some parts of East TX have restrictions on doe, so be sure you aren't in such a county.

What is the buck to doe ratio on your game cam?

You shooting one or two doe out of 10-15 isn't going to hurt the herd. I guarantee that you aren't getting every deer on the place on camera either.

Our limits are 2/2 and doe only during Thanksgiving weekend. I am not exactly sure because I had 600 pictures to look through and my SD card took a shit on me. I lost everything so the most recent intel I have is from last Saturday to now. I haven't been able to check it since then so I am blind really.

How do you have so few deer there?  Even with out management tags we can kill 4 doe on our license tags and does season runs from tomorrow to the end of the 2nd week in January.  We kill over a 100 does every year off the property I hunt and have not made a dent.

If you are the only one hunting I would just shoot the first decent buck that you can and be done with it because you aren't really going to be able to manage the herd yourself only being able to shoot 2 doe. Maybe after you've hunted a bit and see more doe you can sway your father in law into letting you take one.

From what little I know and have read that part of the state doesn't have the numbers of deer that the areas we hunt do. That's why they have special doe days and antler restrictions on bucks.

We can take up to five deer in San Saba, two being bucks. We also have the extended doe and spike season.

I do not understand why we are only allowed one buck here.  Not that it affects me that much, I rarely see shooter bucks.  All I have to hunt is killing fields and the big boys do not step out until after dark.  Enough thread derail.  OP try and find info on a 1 to 1 buck to doe ratio.  Some places actually go for a 2 to 1 ratio on high fence of really large contiguous properties.  Show that to info to him.  Shoot old mature deer, have fun.

Take it from somebody who has personally seen family members not speak for for 10 years over deer and deer hunting.

If your FIL is the type to worship these creatures as god almighty, and in the mindset that every buck will eventually produce a 180 class buck. Kindly refuse the offer to hunt its not worth the bullshit.

Its jst a fuking deer but many dont see it that way!

To answer the question of the buck to doe ratio I have on my camera: I have seen alot more bucks than doe. Well, minus a 13 point now that was never on my camera!

Shoot a buck. They are bigger and have more meat.

^^I've been that outcast...and I had permission from my MIL AND her brother. My advice in your situation is; 1. play by his rules. 2. Probe to see if he is open to discussion on the harvest of does. If yes, present facts that you have researched mixed in with ideas on numbers to harvest. And keep it civil. If he is not open to discussion then see #1. If you don't want to play by his rules, I would recommend finding a new place to hunt and respectfully decline offers until you are given rules that you wish to play by.

I am going to play by his rules. He is an awesome man and has done so much for me and my wife since we got married. It's not that big of deal to me and I'll just wait until next year and maybe we will see a few more.

The more does in heat the better action you will have during the rut. I cut back on my doe harvesting a few years back, and the rut has been very active, and larger bucks seem to be coming into my land to fornicate with them. When I first started hunting I tried to "manage" my does and keep things even, hardly ever saw any bucks. Now its like a god damn brothel back there for large bucks.

I have a spreadsheet program that takes the number of photos with bucks, does, and does with fawns that will give you herd size, population density, buck to doe ratio.  I got it from

the local TPWD biologist and he prefers it to spotlight surveys.  On 2700 acres I use 12 cameras and leave them out for 10 days (around 7000 pictures) if you got two or three more cameras

to put out you could use that to give you a good representation of your population.  PM your email to me if your interested in the spreadsheet.

Maybe giving him a year's membership in QDMA would help. Their magazine is loaded with good information about managing deer.
