I had a 92 pound doe processed this week (small I know, but she was an average sized doe for our club) and only received about 24 pounds of meat after processing.
I am new to hunting, but I figured she would yield more meat? She was small, but not overly skinny. Does the yield sound right? |

That sounds pretty close ...
It would be a lot more fun to butcher a deer if all you had to do was skin it and slice the entire carcass into thick marbled steaks, eh? There sure is a lot of bone, tendon, ligaments and other crap surrounding those choice cuts, though. Lose the hide, hair, head, antlers, hooves, legshanks, and all the internal organs, and you've got about enough meat on a small deer for a couple big burgers! |
| I do all my own butchering and I have been doing it for 20 years. I have this year gotten 46 pounds of meat from a very large buck and 27 pounds of meat from a very nice size doe. This is the first year I weighed every bit and was pretty amazed at how little you really get. |
