I hope this is the best forum since I use my camera for deer, if not please move.

I have a Moultrie I40 game camera that I bought last year.  It is more than 1 yr old and has exceeded its warranty but the screen no longer works and I can't set it up to use it.  With that being said I am needing advice for a good game camera.  Please advise for best bang for the buck and pros/cons of IR vs Flash.

Check this thread, and do a search of the archives.

There have been many discussions about them.
Now with that said. ANYTHING BUT MOULTRIE!!!!!!!!!

In the past, I have defended the Moultrie cameras. NO MORE!

Have a camera that I bought, at just over a year, it just wouldn't trigger anymore.

Another quit accepting SD cards. (meaning when inserted, the screen would say SD Card Locked)

No matter what card I put in. (Yes, I checked the cards to make sure they weren't locked)

So I call the CS number and get what they call a CS Rep. Better description would be BARBIE THE VALLEY GIRL. Like OMG!!!

I explain what issues are, She tells me that I need to take card out , and slide the lock on the SD Card.

I tell her I have done that, and also tried 6 different cards by different makers.

She tells me- Sir, you are not listening. You need to make sure the lock on the card is unlocked.

I again tell her that I have done that. Get the same reading no matter what card I use.

She says are you sure that the cards are unlocked? UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

YES!!!!

She puts me on hold for 10 minutes, comes back, and says I need to disconnect batteries, for 1 minute and then reinstall, and camera will reformat.

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tells me nothing else they can do. I ask her is she is a TECH, or just a CS REP. She says a CS TECH REP.

I ask - Do you work on cameras?

Her- No I just answer the phones.

Give me your supervisor. 27 minutes on hold, and I get another female.

I explain the above, and she starts laughing.

She says she has no idea what the other girl is talking about.

It seems Moultrie has outsourced their CS.

1st girl was in Nevada ( I think)

2nd was actually at moultrie in AL.

She had me do a couple of things, still didn't correct issues.

Said cameras are out of warranty, I could send in, and if they could fix it, they would and notify me before how much going to cost.

If decided to have fixed, then they would and ship back to me. If couldn't then would give me a "discount" towards a new one.

I asked for example, and she told me the price. Guess what? It was $20 more than they sell for at Bass Pro or Cabelas.

NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ETA: several of my hunting partners refuse to use them. I kept using them because they were cheap, and so am I.

The old saying is true. YOU DO GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

I have heard a lot of good about the Moultrie M80, I'm thinking about trying one.   My experience with the Wildgame Innovations cameras is not good so I would not recommend  them.   I'm using a Bushnell Trophy right now and I'm pretty happy with it, takes decent pics and video and the batteries last forever.   The other one I am thinking about is the Little Acorn.   Chasingame.com is a good place to do some reading about game cams.

Moultrie is sending me a new screen for 14.99.  The other option was that I send it to them at my expense on shipping and they would fix it in 2-4 weeks.

In for the more experienced feedback.

I'm using a Moultrie M80 mini cam and have no issues and no complaints.  I like the IR over the flash personally.  I also have a stealth cam sniper pro 8mp (flash).  It's more picky about the brand/class of card that goes in it and up close pics have some washout from the flash.  I don't hate it and have had no real issues other than the previous mentioned quirks and washout.

I hear good things about the cuddeback attack, but it's more expensive.

I just read a thread over on archerytalk.com started by a dealer who ragged Cuddeback's ass and says he's not selling them any more.  A lot of other people piled on about their quality sucking and now they have some policy saying that they want $100 to start to fix your camera.   I thought about the attack too but I think I'll stay away.

I have had great luck with Cuddebacks, less so with Moultrie, Wildview, Bushnell or Stealth (worse of the bunch). The Cudde Capture struggles to take color pics early in the morning and will not run on SD cards bigger than 2 gb, but other than that they are fine. My other Cuddes are the old school no flash that run on those odd big cards, those 2 cams are 6 and 7 years old and have been out in some real tough winter conditions, still work fine. I am done with any brand other than Cudde.

I hadn't heard this about the cuddeback, but it's good to know.

It must be a common problem with that series of camera because when I called Moultrie they offered to ship me a new screen for $14.99.  I have mixed feelings about having to pay for something they know is defective but at least the part is available.  I got it and the camera is back up and running.  I hope to have some pictures soon.

The new Leopold is awesome. Bushnell cams work very well. Cuddeback is a POS...old ones were great but they have gone to hell in last few years. I like IR and black IR. I run 5 cameras 8 months of the year and have tried them all. Moultrie is pure garbage.

I have the Moultie M80 and have run it for a couple of months. The picture quality is excellent. I just can't speak for long term durability yet.

We've had really good luck with the Primos Truth Cams.  There's a TC46 that's been running for a year and a half straight at a spot we feed year round without issue.
