[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Large bore AR calibers, which one?

So out of the available big bore calibers (6.8spc, 450bushmaster, 458 socom, 50 beowolf), what would be your choice for deer hunting?

I know a lot depends on style of hunting, but for a 200yd deer gun, what would you choose?

(i am referring to only calibers that can use an AR15 lower btw...no AR10's)

I would not call the 6.8 a "Big Bore". I have the 6.8 and the .50 Beowulf. For deer, I go with the 6.8, for hogs, the .50 gets the nod...

For deer hunting 6.8 SPC is plenty deadly. If you were hunting boar or bears I would opt for something bigger like the .450 Bushmaster, .458 Socom or Beowulf.

I know dozens of guys (myself included) who use the .458 SOCOM for deer here in Indiana –– but it's the only caliber in an AR-15 that is legal for deer here and available off the shelf.

I'm getting ready to buy a 458 Socom myself. Just looking for one that is in stock at a shop that isn't charging more than MSRP

I think i'm going with the 6.8spc

Oh and i see someone mentioned 40 caliber for hogs, i wouldnt spend that much money on the vermin. .223/5.56mm for them....

love both my RRA 6.8's have shot both elk and deer with the 110 sierra pro hunters

My vote is for 260. DPMS makes a lightweight version with an 18" barrel. –– but that violates your requirement that it fit on an AR-15 lower.

Out to say 150yds, is there really THAT big of an advantage with the 6.8 versus .223?

If using a good bullet (barnes tsx), i think i'll try some 62gr tsx loads before i drop 800 on a new 6.8 upper.
