I'm not a fan of the 223 for deer but I recently emailed Federal Cartridge Company and asked them what was their three best rounds in 223 for deer hunting.
The only answer they gave was the Nosler 60 gr Partition.
Take it FWIW.

Last year I used a Remington 55 grain corelokt.  Blew through a small buck and never recovered the bullet.  Entrance was right on the money and the exit was up and 5 inches to the left.  Deer dropped in it's tracks, kicked and huffed for 20 seconds and it was over.

This year I'm going to try a 62 grain Barnes triple shock.

Most guys seem to use the Win. 64 grain Power Point bullet, but I don't know if it is available in a factory load.  It is considered by most to be one of the best for the "poodle shooter" caliber.

I loaded some earlier this month for my niece to use.  My brother is going to limit her to 50 yards and broadside-only shots.  They will do the job when punched through the rib cage.

Just sighted mine in with the 62gr Fusion in my Stag model 2, Got real good groups with the 1-9 barrel. Going to use mine for doe days, under 100 yrds broadside.

I use the 62gr TSX over 25gr RL15.  I have a 1/9 twist 16" and it is very accurate from my rifle.  It is deadly on hogs and deer, but of course our deer here are built like dogs.

Why is it that everyone says the deer in Texas are small but on the hunting shows at ranches, they are HUGE in Texas? Jeff Foxworthy, Larry Wieshun, Bill Jordan, etc... all kill monsters in Texas.

Big antlers, little bodies.

The grass on the golf courses doesn't make for big deer.

Illusional.

Deer sporting 190+ headgear looks like a monster. And if you are counting headgear, he is.

If you are going by body weight, then he is small compared to deer in other parts of the country.

As for bullet selection, everyone in previous posts has given you some great advice.

I personally like the Werewolf Killers. (Winchester Ballistic Silver Tips)

I now use them in every one of my guns, that they are available in. My favorite is the 95 grain in 243.

I did use them in my 223 one year, but went back to my little 243.

I, for the most part, do not take shots over 200 yards and have no issues. During the last 5 years, I have several hunting partners that now use them, after switching from Federals, Remington core-lokts, and others.

I'm using a 75 gr jhp in my 18" with 1:8 twist. Team member RaymondH3201 dropped a deer last season with a neck shot using a 55 gr softpoint out of a 20" HBar.

Federal now has their bonded Fusion bullet in 62gr .223 Rem. It's loaded in LC brass and shoots good in my 1/7 CMMG. I hope to have a deer report later next month.

Yeah first one in a few years. Most of my deer were taken with the Remington 55 gr PointedSoft Point. Back in the old day I used my Mini-14. Before you rol your eyes this one was a shooter and brought home the deer many a year.

The Winchester 64 grain is what most have used in the past and have chatted with a few people on different forums who buy the stuff at Evil mart. I've never seen it here execpt in regular firearm stores.

Good hunting and keep your powder dry.
