Saturday was opening day here. It was warm about 55-60 degrees and rainy. I got up to go hunting and didn't think it was that good of a day so I took the dog for a walk, went back to bed.
All I did was think how I don't have much time to hunt this year and how I needed to be in the woods. I hit the stand around 6. It's in a cow pasture about 75 acres or so. I watched the cows pose for my trail cam for about 45 minutes. Around 7AM I saw a doe run out on the other end of the pasture about 300yrds or so away. I was going to take a crack at her but she ducked down the other side of the hill. As I sat watching for her ,out jumps a small 4 point. He was after her, hot on her trial. I grunted, he looked the other way, I shot, he ran like hell. I thought I missed him. It's a new rig and I wasn't 100% on the hold over at that distance. Long story short. He ran about 30 yards. It was a 263 yard shot with a Remington .270, 130gr Rem. In the heart, cut the bullet out just under the skin on the other side. Now my lease agreement is complete. Guy wanted some meat in exchange to let me hunt. Then to top it all off, on the way out I saw 2 8 points buck casually walking on the other side of the road and on Sunday I saw the biggest deer I've ever seen in nature not far from there. I guess now I'm hunting horns. |
