Analyzing the Russian Army’s EW Capabilities in the Invasion of Ukraine
 Quote HistoryIt is noteworthy that pictures circulated on social media on 28th February showed what appeared to be captured civilian V/UHF handheld radios. These were said to have been captured from Russian troops. There was some speculation that these radios were manufactured in the People’s Republic of China. It is a safe bet that these radios are not at the leading edge of telecommunications technology. As such, they should be very easy to jam. The use by Russian forward units of such basic technology raises some interesting questions, not least about the health of Russian Army tactical communications. These questions will be dealt with in later articles. From an EW perspective, it may illustrate lacklustre jamming performance. Such rudimentary radios should be a piece of cake to jam. Anecdotal evidence from Russia’s previous intervention in Ukraine from 2014 divulged that electromagnetic fratricide was rife. Russian V/UHF jamming regularly shut down the radio communications of Russian troops in range of the jammer. Surely troops using would find these radios all but useless if V/UHF jamming was supporting their manoeuvre. Russian doctrine stresses EW as an integral part of manoeuvre. There is an apocryphal adage that summarises Russian Army doctrine; “attrit a third, jam a third and the remain third will collapse.” This use of civilian standard V/UHF communications seems to suggest that either V/UHF jamming is not being used, being used sporadically and/or is useless. |

That was interesting but brings up some questions? What GPS systems do the cell phones sold in Ukraine and Georgia use? Does the Russian Glonass system have selective availability and is it turned on? Are they spoofing only the US GPS signals?

Those guys are regular Ukrainian army? Why no radio pouches for the Motorolas? Must be fresh out of training or emergency issue? I can understand the CCRs not having a pouch.

They have no shoulder microphones, or headsets, so clipping the radio up where it is easy to hear seems like common sense. I have ended up doing the same with mine. Easy to move if you need to, and no real estate taken up with a radio pouch.

Baofengs are still in high demand with the Territorial Defense troops. I sent a batch of Baofengs and TYT UV88 to them in late March. They already received it and the radios are being used.
I'm getting ready to send more radios that were donated by friends and some folks here on Arfcom. It's a mix of Baofengs UV88, TYT 380, several mobile VHF/UHF rigs, Yaesu FT-50R, mag mount antennas, speaker/mics for HTs, PL259 connectors etc. I'm still taking donations. Also looking for SDR receivers (like SDRPlay). |
