I may not have much luck this evening. Foul weather passed through here about 90 minutes ago. Just drizzle now but the static crashes are killing my reception.

I will have to run out and flip up my BTV5 asI laid it down for the storms. correction.,, i am going to skip 80 tonight other than listen. I don’t get that, the cards are half the fun....old school! Heck before the internet that was it for validation of the contact. |

Heck before the internet that was it for validation of the contact. View Quote The first card I received after I upgraded to General was made by Hamtoons. I thought it was so cool that I had the same cartoonist make mine. I don't think he is taking new orders right now. Check out Hamtoons if you get a chance. He is a very good artist and makes really unique cards. Mailing cards filled out by hand reminds me of a simpler time. This message required minimal effort and you will receive it almost instantly. You will also forget about it almost instantly. 10 years down the road you may stumble across that card and say, Oh yea, I remember that guy. That's what I like about it. |

2109 NCS 5-8 2110 Glen Va, 5-9 2110 Chris in Ill, 4-4 2111 weak station 2112 weak station 2113 Jason in Ohio 5-9, but missed your check in. |

4 check-ins on 20 meters.
21 check-ins on 40 meters. 6 check-ins on 80 meters. Thank you guys and gals (one lady checked in) for checking in. Conditions are noisy on 40 and 80 meters this time of the year. Yes, the station from Maine was pushing S9+35 here. He said I was very loud there too. We both used the same antenna model. |
Yay! I got heard on all three bands. 🙂. I think only the second time I have done that. 80m was pretty marginal, though, I wouldn’t have been able to make much of a QSO.
I managed to contact NC just before the net began on 40 meters. It was a couple of minutes from the beginning of the net.
I thought I had a better chance before the pile-up began. As usual, Andrei was 10 over S9 into northern IL. |
Guess who I had a QSO with, on 20 meters, after the net?
Hint: He was from Canada. No it's not the old, lonely guy we talked to, several months ago. |

A couple of cards I got wound up costing me a bundle as I had to figure a way of getting them to and from a country with a high rate of mail theft. Embassies won't help you with this. Ask me how I know. Protip. Bring your QSL card into a Hallmark store and explain to the woman there that you're a ham and are looking for envelopes that will 'nest' and explain the QSL card thing to them. Mention that many of them are headed overseas and you'll get their attention. They have SCADS of excess envelopes and will cheerfully just give them to you by the boxful. |

He remembers living under Stalin and his family escaping from Poland. He was in Air Force and they forced him to learn Morse Code as a punishment. The guy is full of stories. I acted like I never heard of him before. LOL. |

View Quote If I can go through one of the managers like OQRS that's a slam dunk. You just PayPal them a couple of bucks. Mail: Nest a SAE inside another envelope. Put your card and the applicable number of green stamps in it stamp the ourside envelope and fire away. If possible, email ahead and ask about mail theft etc etc. Also some DXstations really don't want your card and for a couple of bucks viaPayPal will send you one. When you email them beforehand they will tell you. Know what postage is beforehand and round UP. $2.01=$3.00 for example. This is dated but will give you at least some idea of costs It's pretty straightforward. Your card, an SAE and return postage=QSL card. A few places are prohibitively expensive but many of them have outside QSL services. IIRC Iranian overseas postage is about $20...IF it doesn't get stolen! One guy in a French posession told me mail theft is rife there and I'd likely get ripped off. I said "Hold my beer" and sent him my QSL in a lovely pink envelope with girly lavendar handwriting complete with cheap perfume and a lipstick kiss and it got through. No Frenchman would touch anything like that with a ten-foot pole. Sucked getting the lipstick off. Gasoline on a rag worked OK. |
