Okay, I'm getting old and can't remember the frequency for every repeater, haunt, and hideout. My google-fu is weak and I'm trying to find a HT that will display a programmed text name for each stored frequency. In the days of dual, tri, and quad banders, does one exist? I'd like to stay HT if possible and not a small mobile.

Most all do that.

I just got a new Icom Id51a that was on sale and it will do that and the menus are pretty easy to use. Plus you can use the programming software to type them with a computer.

The cheap Baofengs will do that.

Most all that I know of will.
Depends on what you want out of a HT.
ID-51a+ has GPS and can suggest near repeaters.

The real question is how many digits in the display do you need. Not if any HT's will do it (easier to say which ones won't).

My Kenwood TH-F6A, Icom ID-51A+, Yaesu FT-60 and Baofeng UV-5RA all do.

The only HTs I have that won't do it, don't have a display at all :)

Thanks for the help guys. Understandably, when I cruise the web the only screenshots I see are the frequency(ies) itself on the display. I don't need many characters, 8ish should get me in the ballpark.

I have all of my rigs (HT, base, mobile) programmed with physical location of repeater then maybe a call sign if there is room in display...when I hear someone say call me on '4 Seven' I look at them funny..I don't work that way

If you download them from the repeater book, the name will be the call sign, ( may have to turn on the name instead of the freq ) on a computer before you write the image to the HT, you can change the callsign to the town , or whatever you want to use.name.

I just did that today with a Beofeng UV-82. It is tedious even on a computer, but having the repeater callsign does nothing for me.

On a related note, is there an app or a download to your phone list of repeaters?

Same here. I have the names of the various mountain peaks, hills and ridges where the repeater sites are located. I don't have the frequencies memorized.

I have the dual displays on my Baofengs set up to display the channel name on the top display, and the frequency on the bottom display. If I want to check, I can put the same channel on both displays and then get both the name and frequency at the same time.

I do the same thing. I may not remember the freq or call, but I can tell the peaks I'm near when out and about in the desert.
