I've been trying to get my Dad set up with some of the digital modes, and hit a roadblock.  Installed WSJT-X on his Windows 10 machine, configured it to talk to the rig, and was able to get him to have a QSO.  When he shut down the program and restarted it, he is getting an "error in KV decoder, or no KV decoder present" message in the QSO window when he tries to answer a CQ.  I have had him uninstall, reboot, then reinstall WSJT-X, no difference.  Also, tried to uninstall, reboot, delete the WSJT folder from his C:, reboot, then reinstall.  This worked until he restarted WSJT-X and tried to use it again.  On the installs I made sure he did not have the box checked to install the KV decoder, as I understand that is for Linux users not windoze.

I know I must be missing something.  Any suggestions as to what that might be?  Here is a screen shot of the error in case it helps:

Thanks.

Try having him run WSJT-X as administrator?

Damn, I had that same problem on my Windows 7 netbook.  I don't recall what I did to fix it but I think it involved hunting down the KV Decoder exe and installing it somewhere... not very helpful, sorry.

I will try having him run it as administrator, and see what happens.  Odd thing is I have it on both a Win7 laptop and an 8.1 tablet without any issues.

That might do it.  Looking at my installs I have a copy in the WSJT folder.  I'll have him check to see if it is there or not.

ETA:

Beefington, you nailed it. TY.

That seemed to do it.  For some reason it was not included with the install package on his system.  Found the file, downloaded it, put it in the C:\WSJT\WSJTX\Bin folder, rebooted, and it appears to be working.

The file can be found here for those that may need it.

This thread is exactly why this is my favorite ham radio forum on the web.

You also need to very carefully set your audio levels. WSJT-X makes it easy because they have a receive audio slider on the left and a transmit audio slider on the right.

Set the receive audio slider so that the graph shows 30 dB.
Adjust your transmit slider so you are not triggering the ALC in your radio. You will almost certainly distort and splatter with the way you have it set now.

Absolutely.  Working on that with him now.  My first concern was making sure the rig/computer were talking and it would work.

I run a wattmeter past the tuner for this reason. Since I use the computers soundcard, I set the level on the computer just below ALC then use the WSJT slider for PO while watching the wattmeter.  Runs well and I don't need to mess with an external soundcard interface.
