Because my little honda has an airbag recall, I have a rental. It's a Jeep Patriot 4x4. I'm going to have this bugger for another couple months.

I want to put my 706 in it for the upcoming road trip we've already planned.
Ic706 mkI
AH-4 tuner
Whip antenna
Various hamsticks

Ideas?

I have a k400 mount, and I'm not opposed to drilling holes that can be easily hidden and forgotten.

If the Patriot you have has the outside mounted spare tire you might look to using that spare tire mount for the antenna. Everything else should be a easy placement. A good thing you can use is a double sided sticky tape made by Scotch/ 3M it's a grey foam type tape and the removable part is red in color, that Wal-Mart sells. I've used it for more permanent head, mic. mounts etc. Even in the extreme heat in NM it has never come loose. Other nice thing is it can be removed without leaving any residue, good stuff!
Hope this helps.

Unfortunately it's got the spare inside. :(

I was surprised that the hood is bonded with a nice ground strap, as well as the back hatch.

I have had some luck with the "three magnet" magnetic mounts. They held 'ham stick' style mobile mounts on the roof of our Cherokee and got out fairly well. I did have to use an adapter coil at the base of the antenna to get a good match. One negative was that the antenna system was detuned when it rained and water got between the magnets and roof of the car.

It depends how well it's bonded/grounded.

Sounds like it already has a good start

K-400 5/8th should work well

see if you can get the 12volts thru a grommet on the firewall

some cheap MFJ hamsticks might be easier than the AH-4

.....anythings better than that damn hybrid you usually drive

For picture reference, this is a Patriot definitely not a Wrangler no rear mounted spare.  Yes this is mine.....

Yeah, so, last night, I tried to find a way to get through the firewall.

No dice, I'll just leave the gear at home. I'll just have handheld VHF/UHF.

Yeah firewall access sucks I actually drilled a hole to get wires through in mine not just radio but other stuff.  That is the one complaint on the Jeep Patriot forums no access through firewall.
