The purpose of my 817ND is to ultimately make it a camping/vacation/field day rig.  It is also currently serving double duty as my base station.

Currently, I have:
-817ND
-LDG Z817 Tuner
-Homebrew Endfed

Today, I picked up a Samlex SEC-1235M power supply which has much less RF noise vs. the supplied battery charger that came with the radio.  Between the power supply and rig, I have powerpole connections for the next part of the project.

My plan is to use an ammo can with SLA's as a portable power supply.  Eventually, I'll put a PWRGate PG40S between the power supply, battery backup and rig.  This'll allow the charging of the battery backup while also powering the rig either by the power supply or battery backup.  The 30A rating on the Samlex should be big enough for a 100w rig while still floating the batteries.  As it stands right now, the 817 pulls 2.2A and my FT-7900 pulls 9.9A so I have no problems.

For those that say the ammo can is too heavy for camping, you're correct and it won't go camping with me.  The ammo can is merely a base station backup along with a field day/vacation power supply.
